hey guyi ran my error coes and i got one for a theft deternt signal missing what does this mean is it major?? the only other codes i got was a vacc leak which has only come up since my reg hose blew off and i put it back on (to be all fixed tommorrow),, and the o2 sensor runnign rich which is understandabele with the reg rooted and allow fuel into the intake, but what does the otyher mean?
key reader problem or slip ring not making good contact with key at times no big problem seen it so often over the years .
Disconnect the battery to remove it and check again in a week. This is a common code which usually means nothing.

According to the gregorys workshop manual the error code 31 is set when the BCM does not return a signal to the ECU when the ignition switch is turned to the on position to permit operation of the injectors..It says there will be a 1 second delay in the starter motor operation after the key is turned to the start position when this code is set.I doubt its to do with the key or key reader itself, as when the key cant be read, or theres a problem with the key reader or keyhead, the engine wont even attempt to crank at all.
I have to agree that this error can mostly be dismissed, often when a bad connection between key and ignition occurs this will log a fault... mine does it all the time, sometimes I scratch my head at why? but unless this error impeads on the normal functioning of your car I wouldn't worry to much about it... unless your like me and hate seeing things wrong with your ride, take it to a "reputable" auto elec and get them to check it out
Goodluck
On my Commodore, you can partially remove the key with ignition ON or basically any position - this stops the key reader ring reading the key, because it is no longer in contact with the key reader ring and I'd guess it also sets a code 31. This is all probably due to wear of the key and the ignition lock, but it's no big deal. The newest VS Commodore is now 13 years old so you've got to expect some wear. Whenever I get a 'no start' event, I press the unlock button and I can hear the BCM switch things on.....then instant start.
