If the vehicle is fitted with an airbag and it is disconnected or not working then the car is not roadworthy. Its the same if you fit an aftermarket steering wheel with no airbag. If its fitted originally,it must work.Im not sure about how you could go removing the system completely,as some VS's didnt have the airbag system fitted, and just had the normal steering wheel.Maybe you could just remove it altogether.I cant see how they can tell the difference once the SRS system and wiring etc is removed.

it is on the compliance plate, so if there is any suspicion they will look there.
I don't know the code number for that one.

its adr 69 in case your wondering: http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roa.../Airbags_1.pdf

anyways, usually there are two or three torx bits holding the bag on, then once you get the bag off you will have access to a 17mm nut on the steering column, undo that. then you need a steering wheel puller or gear puller kit. you will find that there will be two holes with either M8 thread or 5/16's thread which you need to screw your puller kit onto. once its on, and the pullers pin is contacting nice and center on the steering column, you tighten the puller's nut, pulling the wheel off while pushing the column.

if you decide your going to be a complete twat and do what twats normally do which is; "get a mate to pull the wheel while you hit the column with a big hammer" your a twat and i hope you have fun replacing your collapsed steering column.

I would have thought the part about being a complete twat was mandatory once he said he wanted to remove an airbag steering wheel to fit a sports one.

That's like saying this to a gun salesman. "I want to buy a gun with no safety catch because it's cooler"

There is 4 security screws (6 star with a pin in the middle) on the back of the wheel holding the airbag on you will need a special tool set to get them out can get them at dick smith about $20 for a set but like the others say if it came with a airbag it must have one but its your car its up to you

i have a different opinion regarding the air-bag. what's the difference between driving a car originally did not have an air-bag to one with it removed? nothing.....

so if you don't care about the extra safety the air-bag provides, you can remove it. this is ofcourse provided that it doesn't make the car "un-roadworthy" (only by law)

btw how sure are you guys in sayinhg that it will make the car un-roadworthy? perhaps it's worth checking that "fact" out, by calling road authority or those guys who do road-worthy certificates. or even checking on-line. wonderful thing about internbet

Anyone who removes one of the best secondary saftey devices is doing their bit to strengthen the human gene pool.

Oh, and for your information, I am one of those guys who do roadworthy certificates.

i understand what all you fellas are sayin about the airbags in steering wheels and safety and that but if some1 wants to remove there stock steering wheel why not its there choice, i personally dont like stock wheels coz there chunky and oversized, i drove around in my old vs for 3ish years and cops never once picked up on not having an airbag in the steering wheel. saying that my VT's got airbag lol just thought i would put in my input..

G'day all just to throw in my 2 cents worth if you remove/alter something that is req for ADR youo then not only make the vehicle unroadworthy but also non compliant and in some states this can lead to the car being impounded and destroyed, does not happen all the time but i have seen it happen more than once, I think it had alot to do with the attitude of the owner to the law. Be warned for me i would be fixing the horn buttons.

the cars allready defectable and unroadworthy as the horns not working
which also means your insurance...if you have it. can be void if your car is involved in an accident
    but thats up to you

all i can add is if your gonna stuff around with a steering wheel that has an air bag in it disconnect your battery first unless you want 2 black eyes and a broken nose

You sir, are a complete idiot. You want to remove a life saving device to fit a 'sports' wheel, because your horn is broken, and you "dont like the stock ones because they're chunky". Get the horn fixed and attempt to grow a brain cell or two while your at it.

Around here it's always open season on anyone who wants too,

    delete their airbag,

    hollow their cat

or dick with their emission controls.

It's only because we care and don't want too see them get hurt, massive fines or void their insurance.

air bags are useless my mate crashed his commodore and it didnt even go off, and there apparently a life saver, so i dont think it would matter if he removed it or not, and i didnt see anywhere about him putting a sports wheel on he might be replacing it with another airbag wheel

boganracing: did your mate die when he crashed his commodore and his life saving air bag didnt go off, they are designed to only go off when the force of the impact is past a certain amount of g's so hitting a solid object at low speed could cause them to explode but a high speed hit into the side of a car or rear of a moving car will not in most cases explode has the object his has absorbed the impact.

as for the op q's what has been said is correct on its removal, i would be looking at a nice leather hsv to replace it with. and have you looked further into why the horn doesnt work? is it deffinetly the airbag that is faulty or a relay fuse or the horn itself??

I suspect the road saftey statistics would show otherwise.
