while i was driving yesterday and came to a stop and went to take off again my V6 VS calais was struggling the transmission was slipping and my check engine light came on and the car wouldn't kick back,i managed to get it home turned it off and then on again and the check engine light has dissapeared but the transmission is still struggling?? i have only had the car about 3 weeks so i dont really know what the transmission is like but i have noticed when i change from either park or reverse down to drive it really clunks into gear unless i stop in neutral for about 5-10seconds,and it was occasionally slipping a little bit between 2nd and 3rd but apart from that it seemed ok! does this sound like my transmission is no good or it might just be a service or something?? i dont want to take it to a transmission place and spend money on a service to then find out it is stuffed anyway unless i have to.... any suggestions?????
have you checked the fault codes?
have u checked if it has tranny fluid in it?
i have checked the transmission fluid that seems fine but not the fault codes i will have to have a look on here how to check them and see what happens from there...
I checked fault codes and it's saying 81 which is listed as 2-3 change solonoid, if it is that would that affect my car in 1st gear when I am trying to accelerate??? It was slipping every now and then between 2nd and 3rd so I am not doubting that there is a problem there I am just curious if it would affect 1st.
That's not what I wanted to hear lol!! And I don't want to spend money on a transmission that is stuffed! If I take it somewhere will they be able to tell if it's stuffed without pulling it to pieces or is a guessing game??
take it to a transmission specialist, they will be able to give you an idea of what its up for, which being a vs box they will more than likely say solenoids have shit it.
but to buy a second hand box for them these days cost peanuts and really are not that hard to put in.
Hey rip-38l
Sorry to say, but that deferentially sounds like a new gear box is in order. Depending on how much you bought the car for? and how much you would LIKE to spend rather than you would NEED to spend to fix it. That is up to you, but from the sounds of it the last owner was probably a "boy-racer" and thrashed the first few gears. Few questions,
One: How many Ks on the clock?
Two: Did you get it checked over by a mechanic before you bought it?
Small tip: You can pay the RTA ($30-$40) to go have a look over it for you they are trained to do that sort of thing. Trust me, a small amount of money could save you $3,000+.
Hope it helps.

I took it to a tranny specialist it's getting new solonoids and a service for $160. It drove perfect today all the way there and it was about a 25min drive. I got it cheap I only paid $1400 for it and it is a really nice car to look at it's got 18inch cv8 replicas and it black and silver I got log books with it and a HEAP of receipts from the last 5 years, I actually didn't buy it to keep it so this happening to it is a real pain in the preverbial lol :-).
It's got 230,000k's on it.
