Default Series 2 VR that has been sitting for over 6 monthes

    Morning guys!

Im new to the forums and crossed over to the dark side and bought a Holden!

But anyways, here is my situation: I bought this car yesterday and checked it over as best i could. It is incrdibly straight, one small pin dent prolly done by his sons push bike, resprayed in a really light lavender-bluey colour, clubsport body kit, NO accident history/ vehicle damage i could find, VT-S rims, suspension is fantastic, wheel bearings and hubs seem great, absolutely no rattles, engine was really clean, NO leaks, new roof lining, cruise control module, rebuilt engine and service history, new radiator, alternator, harmonic balancer, new windscreen, headlights and new brake rotors and pads. I think thats about it...

Now when he started it it wasnt too keen on starting but after a lil stab of the throttle and holding it for about 10 seconds it settled down and idled well.

When he took it around for a drive it felt really sluggish and the gearbox tended to stretch out 1st and 2nd gears. When driving home on the highway it doesnt seem to want to go into top gear, i mean it does but the revs have to be high and if the throttle is only open slightly the engines hunts and it feels like its slipping in and out of gear.

Second issue is that the odometer doesnt work.

Third issue is that the car HATES to start in the cold

Fourth issue that one of the bulbs is out but thats an easy fix.

Keep in mind i bought this car for $2500. I think i didnt do too bad and i know that i wouldnt have found a used car that i would be happy with and have budgeted to have thigns fixed. Can anyone here shed some light about what the issues could be from? Im hoping that its just the fact that its been sitting for such a long time but it has been booked in to get the transmission serviced and a general analysis.

    Thanks for your time guys...

Get a trans service at a specialist. Couple hundred bucks and they'll change the fluid, filter, tighten the bands and tell you anything else that's wrong with it.

    Cheers mate!

The only problem i have is that i really dont have the time to do the work myself... I work from 7-6 and by the time i get home its just too dark to be able to do anything properly. On my way to work this morning i got a quote that a gearbox service would cost me about $160. Im thinking that i will get them to service the entire car and see if they can test and clean the fuel system including the injectors as well.

    Finger crossed its that simple!

Thanks for your input mate. Much appreciated!

Lucky it started at all with six months-old petrol. I presume you would have filled up by now, if you haven't put in some Ultimate 98 along with some methylated spirits (to absorb any water in the tank). I'd also be replacing the engine oil & oil filter.

I did put some high octane in there. What im thinking about doing is getting the car fully serviced (gearbox and engine), fresh fluids everywhere, get the fuel system flushed and injectors and fuel pump properly cleaned, upgrade my headlight bulbs (i have always used the phillips White bulbs).

I have always run all of my cars on BP ultimate due to the fact it burns cleaner and slightly better fuel economy. Every 5 tanks i use Wynns fuel system cleaner anyways. It may seem excessive but at least i know its in working order.

On top of this i also have on the cards a full SS induction kit for it, and a full pacemaker exhaust system, some irridium plugs and new leads. Thinking im leaning to the tri-Y design rather than the 4-1 tuned length design as the car wont be used in the top rev range much at all. I will also want a proper LSD for it though since im new to holdens im not sure what kind of a diff/centre that would entale. Can any of you guys here comment on those basics mods and their effectivness? Anythig else i could do without breaking the bank?

What is the general concensis of the SS inductions so called "spiral wire" high performance leads? Also thinking of upgrading the coils to some MSD units. Again i know it may seem a bit much and not really for the performace side of things but mainly because they will be new units, better than OEM and MAYBE some performance gain. Basically peace of mind. What do you guys think?

    Thanks a lot guys!

Another thing i will add is that even when the car is warm either if im at the lights or i have just selected drive it tries its hardest to stall the car. Is this issue related to being not started and driven for ages?

    Cheers

    Alrighty...

It turns out the problem was the fuel pump. Apparently it was not functioning properly and that was the cause of the massive flat spot when taking off and just cruising.

It also needed the Harmonic balancer replaced! Dont think the previous owner ever did

Heater tap was replaced and a little solonoid that governed the vehicles idle speed while cold.

He also went over the car and found the exhaust has got holes everywhere, the bushes up the front right are about 40% perished, the power steering rack has a slight leak and that he tested the inlet charge and his computer is telling him that there is a vacuum leak around the manifold somewhere and that explains the rough idling.

For all the work he did and parts included he charged me $625. Thats including a general service as well.

I will be going back next week to get this manifold leak fixed and i will start budgeting for new bushes everywhere all over the car. Does anyone reccomend any particular brand? I was thinking either whiteline or nolothane... Any advice? Thanks guys

    Hi guys,

Top gear in the auto just dropped on me on the way home tonight. It seems to pick up all first 3 gears no worries but refuses to go into top gear. There was no noise, no shuddering, nothing to indicate that it would happen. What do u guys think the cause of this is?

On the upper hand i know that the engine is in good condition cause it survived the drive from campbelltown to picton at nearly 5,000rpm for half the way... Happy as larry.

Turns out a valve piston was cracked in the gearbox and i burnt out 4th gear nearly followed by 3rd when i took it into the shop. The guy there is a family friend and i asked him to beef it up when he rebuilds it. From what he told me hes putting in some titanium valves, corvette servos? and wider bands with kevlar in them with some heavy duty clutch packs and performance seals.
