    Default gearbox solinoid

the mother in law took her vr 6 banger to the mechanics because the engine light on the dash came up. theyv told her that a gearbox solinoid needs replacing at the cost of $700. does the box have to be removed 4 this to be done? it sounds far to steep to me. then they also said the brakes need doin at a cost of $1000. wtf. any info will be grealy appreciated
    thanks

hey mate, first off the solenoid can be replaced without taking the box out you just have to drop the pan off to get to them.... also u can do your own brakes if its just the pads that need replacing and will cost you no where near 1000..... thats just pethetic pricing on the mechanics behalf... hope this helps
    opps wont do that again

I had a solenoid replaced about 2 years ago and the cost including a transmission service was $206. Same deal with the brakes - replace front pads should be around $150 max including parts.... like the above post, sounds like the mech is after easy money so try elsewhere.

does the transmissions gears change smoothly or is the gear changes delayed or get stuck in gear? Also mate that is a bloody rip off, $1000 for brakes to get done! hope ya told him to stick it! you can buy break pads for front 'n' rear all up round about $50 to $90 depending on cheapo brand or not..It should cost you round about $150 -$250 to get a mech to replace all pads..did this mechanic say anything about re-machinn the rotors also???

Honestly it sounds like it is one of those mechanics who rips off women as they think they don't know anything about cars, happens a bit unfortunetly. Go to another mechanic first, then see what they say, and if possible get her to take a bloke with her as they are more likely to give a reasonable quote if a guy is standing there, I don't know why, but it seems a lot of people are still sexist when it comes to cars.

Just for comparison I just got a gearbox replaced with a service kit and new fluids, etc, for $330. And the solenoids are cheap as well, under $50 retail I am pretty sure so the mechanics get them cheaper still.

I'll jump on the hijack as well - when one of mine failed I said to the mech to replace all the solenoids but he said that was crazy as they rarely fail and new ones may still fail 'whenever'....so I took his advice and only replaced the dud one. Also when you buy a reco trans, it will not have new solenoids...they either work or they don't.

That quote is way over the top. One of mine died a few months back and I said replace both since having the pan off and together with dropping the exhaust (to clear the pan) it was around $450.
