Hi Guys
I have a 1993 VR V6 that wont start.
Fuel pump is brand new and works fine and i have spark, the engine turns over fine it just wont fire, and it seems the injectors arent firing(my mechanics tests). i have tried changing ECU's but with no effect.
Does the second hand ECU need to be coded to the key?
Does the BCM control injector pulse in any way?
Where is the BCM located?
How can i check if the BCM is working?
Has anyone had similar issues with a solution as every Auto Elec i ring has no idea what im on about...
Cheers
If there is a problem with the key or key reader, the engine wont even attempt to crank. The BCM and the ECU in the VR/ VS do not need to be "linked" with a Tech 2 scantool. As long as the BCM and the keyhead match, the engine will crank. The "security link" between the BCM and ECU was introduced in later models,VT and onward I think, this later system does need to be security linked with the scantool if either the ECU ot the BCM is replaced. Is there any error codes showing up?If you dont know how to check this, heres a link to a thread that tells you how. This test is quick and easy to do,only takes a minute, and is very handy for troubleshooting problems.---Checking error codes VR/VS (Revised)---I have ran into a similar problem once and it was the CAS(Crank Angle Sensor) that was the problem. The first step is to do the above test/check, and see if any error codes show up.

thanks for the reply,
so do you think its worth getting different BCM to try? What else could my issue be??
Id be checking the wiring around the ECU and around the engine bay.Especially the connector where the wiring plugs into the DFI module(Direct Fire Injection module),(which is the thing the 3 ignition coils sit on and bolt to)..This has pins and contacts in the wiring connector that can corrode and cause problems.Just undo the small bolt/screw that holds it in and unplug it.If it all looks clean and ok,then it could be the DFI module itself is faulty. The error check should show up some info to go on.Do the test and get back to us with the results. It only takes a couple of minutes to do and should give an idea where to start looking.
my machanic and I tried to find an error code but the unit wouldnt link up to the ECU, thats why i thought it was a fualty ECU. Ive checked the connector and they look fine and clean.
I have got spark. Does the DFI control injectors in any way??
Just check the error codes the way its explained in the link.It just flashes up error codes on the check engine light on the dash.If you scroll down near the bottom of the the page in the link I posted, there are some excellent pictures of how to do this test. Its as easy as 123 to do.The DFI module controls the signals from the CAS and camshaft angle sensor that the ECU uses to fire the injectors. But you really first need to run this error check to see if anything is showing up in the engine management system or its sensors etc.
Ive run the error codes and it come up with code 12 which is system pass.
What and where is the DFI module? any way to test it?
cheers
check the wiring between the BCM and the ECU.. seen once or twice, the immobilser is shut of, but the data line between BCM and ECU is broken, and the ECU never gets the "good" signal to fire the injectors..
where is the BCM located?
The BCM is located under the dash in behind the fuse panel .You can see it if you look up in behind the fuses etc. Also how long did you let the error code test go for, just asking this because Ive seen a few people who are new to doing this test, not let the test go through long enough to get past the 3 code 12's at the start. It shows up code 12 three times at the start of the test before showing any error codes. It also shows code 12 after any logged errors. It will continuously show code 12 only when there are no logged error codes.Any logged error codes can be cleared by disconnecting the battery for a minute or two.
Thanks for your help guys turns out the BCM circut board was fried due to water.
replaced it along with a key head and car is working fine again![]()
i have run into a similar problem, my ute, as with all VS ute's has the povo pack BCM, and i was trying to install a mid level BCM so i can have auto power windows and things like that, but when i plugged in to mid BCM, the thing would just crank and crank and crank, but not fire, the was no spark at the coil (V8), even the fuel pump would charge up and cut out like normal, but i plugged the old BCM backin and fired first crank.
I spoke to someone at the local holden dealer and he said it would need to go on the tech 1, and it would cost me 4 hours labour, cause they wanted to run a security and ownership test on the car. i have no problem with the inquiry, but i wasn't paying $400 for something that would take them 5 mins to do
