first of all, this is going to sound vague so bear with me. underneath the dashboard, under where you have the steering wheel theres the plastic cover that you open up which exposes the fuse box and wiring. inside this space there is what appears to be an aftermarket switch in my car, its a 2 way switch, like the one here:

my car has an aftermarket alarm fitted so at first guess i thought it was to disable the alarm, but it doesnt matter which position i place the switch into the alarm works the same regardless. then i figured that it could be an aftermarket killswitch to prevent the engine from starting, but again it doesnt seem to matter which position it is in because the car will start regardless. then i had another idea relating to the foglights. my vs has the foglight globes fitted in the main headlamp set up (not separate as in the ss for example) and when the previous owner had the alarm fitted they placed the l.e.d light which shows if its activated or not, in place of the fog light switch on the far right side of the dash. so i figured that maybe this switch under the dashboard was for the foglights but again no luck.
im all out of ideas about what it could be for, anyone have any suggestions? id love to figure out what it is for and the only option i can think of at current is to try to trace the source of the wiring to the switch and see where it comes from.
that'd be the best bet. ive seen switches like that used to take brake lights out, interior lights out, rear license plate lights out, disable kickdown switches, turn footwell neons on (that may have been removed since) switch off sub amp power, line lockers, thermo fan alternate power etc etc.
theres probably endless possibilities to what it can switch. i'd check with a test light to see whether theres power to it, and when (ign, acc, battery) and try and chase down the wiring after the switch to see where it goes.
above all, good luck. you'll probably need it.
This is good site to watch.I found it informative as I have been researching a lot lately on such matters such as you talk about.
ive got one in my car and the wiring doesnt go anywhere, i just tell people its nos.
My father had one installed in his car, it was like a engine kill switch. Because he lives in Sydney he didn't trust his alarm. All it does is disable the connection to the battery there for rendering the car useless. But your cat starts regardless. Best bet it was something to do with them fog lights. Maybe hook something up to it? some in car LEDs?![]()

It could be anything electrical that can be turned on and off in reality which makes it hard. Completely depends on what's/more to the point WHO's been playing with the electrics before you. I had a starwagon van once that died in surfers paradise (8hrs from home under my hotel,) long story short I needed to install and EFI pump due and blank off the carb. due to lack of tools, lack of proper information and a complete lack of time it ended up being hard wired into battery with a switch installed in the drivers footwell to turn it on and off every time i started/turned the van off. dangerous but it worked and got me home.
hmm tracing the wiring it is then, hopefully this will be easy but i doubt it...
Let us know what it is if and when you figure this out.
Purely for curiosity of course![]()
but of course =)
i had a quick look at the wiring to the switch and discovered something. theres the wiring which goes to switch and attached to this wiring there is wiring which also goes into one of those white wiring clips (similar to this: http://media.digikey.com/photos/Avag.../HEDS-8903.JPG) which plug the wiring into the fuse box under the steering wheel. im now trying to figure out were this clip is supposed to slot in. the on slot in the fuse box isnt the correct shape for the clip with the switch so im not sure whether i should start unclipping things from the fuse box until i can find a slot that this clip will fit. im assuming that due to the white clip hanging loose and not being connected to anything it will mean the switch will not work. my line of thought is that if i can clip it into the fuse box i may be able to discover what the switch does without going to the grand effort of tracing the wire underneath the dash board. anyone got any suggestions whether its a good idea to unclip things from the fuse box so i can clip the switch in, or will disconnecting things from the fuse box break something?
i'd still be tracing the wiring, you don't know whether it needs to be a positive or a negative.
also, how do you mean that the foglights are inside the main headlight assembly?
haha an ejector seat would be awesome!! with regards to the fog lights what i mean is that there are fog lights bulbs located in the main headlamp assembly with the low and high beam bulbs but the bulbs for the fog lights never switch on...
ok ill get pictures tomorrow, im pretty sure they are fog light bulbs. they are not low beam, full beam or high beam bulbs and im pretty sure theyre not parkers either. plus when i checked a catalogue (cant remember what company, was the main one sold at supercheapauto) the bulb number was for the fog lights.. the bulb im talking about is one like the following:

and it is enclosed in the main housing...
haha yeah you can, itd be great for when the misses is pissing me off, flip the switch and away she goes haha!
Hahaha yep, sure she wouldn't be too happy 'bout that though :P
yeah it is a lot of effort considering the wiring tucks right underneath the dash board and heads towards the engine bay. seeing how it doesnt do anything at the moment i may end up cutting the wires and hooking it up to something useful like some footwell neon lighting or something. hmmm, ideas ideas ideas...
ill have to check but im pretty sure they werent for the high beams. hmmm i could be wrong though
Hasnt anyone seen James Bond? Makes the machine guns come out the front grille, duh.
