Doubt they will notice as they won't drive it far as long as it looks OK and the speedo works.

In Queensland you must have a working speedometer and odometer to obtain a RWC or Safety Certificate. The odometer reading is required to prevent sellers winding back the speedo.

    Same in Vic.
From memory it was an ADR from around 1988.

I think it needs to be working..... I just fixed mine the other day.. The cog only cost around $8, Soon I will not need it as I am about to install my level 3 cluster. Will wait until after I get a pink slip done.

No it shouldnt pass in NSW, but like above i doubt they will notice. Plead ignorance if they do and you will have to fix it earlier then you planned.

My odometer is not working at the moment, but it passed rego inspection last month. The bloke didn't notice.

Hey James39, did you buy the cog local, or from Ebay?
    Thanks, Darren.

It may well be different in Queensland where it must be working - the RWC or Safety Certificate must have to odometer reading on it, and when you go to transfer the registration it must show a higher odometer reading than the previous rego transfer. If not they won't transfer rego.

How come? what if you bought a car that had, for legitimate reasons, not been driven since last change of ownership?

Queensland Transport will also take into account the time interval since the last odometer reading and they will listen to legitimate reasons.....however, the reason for this requirement was brought about when certain used car dealers were turning back odometers....sometimes from 300,000km to 70,000km. It is designed to stop misrepresentation....how would you like to buy a car that had 70,000km on the odometer but then you found a service sticker on the windscreen which said the next service was due at 315,000km.
In New Zealand it was widespread when they were importing cars from Japan and winding the odo's back.
