Default VR Ute- Big job to fit airbags?

    G'day all,
Just wondering if fitting a steering wheel with an airbag to a VR that didnt come with airbags would be feasible ? I know there are sensors and all sorts of extra wiring etc, but thought maybe the infrastructure was already there and maybe everything could just be plugged in or something. Its not a big issue if it cant be done, as the car never came out with one, but it would be nice to have one for the extra safety it affords.

    no.

the wiring is not there, and even if it was I would highly recommend not doing it, because if something goes wrong and it sets off, its not going to be good.

Yeah id say it wouldnt be easy, and youd want it to be 100% correctly done, you dont want it to randomly deploy while driving (that would suck lol) or worste it not goin of incase of a accident

yeah gotta change who;e wiring harness to equipe etc. don't worry but they can't go off randomly unless you wire them into your spark plugs.

    Same question as above.
But i have the plug for the computer under my drivers seat carpet.
Does that mean i have airbag wiring through my ute already?

What would be needed to fit it (where are the sensors in the donor car)

. Apart from fitting all sensors, you would need virtually a full new loom plus the bag, clockwork spring etc and finally get it inspected by a mechanical engineer and a modification plate issued. Cost wise you'd be up for many thousands and be better off buying a later model with the bag and ABS etc already fitted. The airbag wiring is yellow as a warning not to touch or disconnect.

^ My ute has, The plug under the seat, The airbag plug in the dash near the column. What other sensors would i need if the wiring harness is already in the car?

I'm guessing, but you'd need the higher level BCM and keys to suit, the airbag module, 1 or 2 airbags, clocksprings for the steering wheel plus all the yellow wiring that Commodores with airbags have under the dash....there may also be some impact sensors somewhere. In Qld you'd need engineer certification also or your insurance company may not want to know you!

From looking at the wiring diagrams for the SRS systems, the SRS modules power comes from a Pink/black wire from fuse number 18 under the dash,so check that the fuse holder has the metal contacts for the fuse. Also check the wiring plug that is under the seat, the Pink/black wire should also be visible there too.Maybe put a fuse in and see if you get 12 volts from the Pink/black wire at the plug for the SRS module..If the wiring is already there for the SRS module under the seat, then the fuse holder is probably right to go to, the jobs half done already if thats the case. The SRS systems dont have anything to do with the BCM,the SRS is a completely seperate system from any others. The only other wiring is a brown wire that goes from the SRS module to the SRS dash warning light, and a Black wire that goes from the SRS module to earth.Theres also 2 wires going from the SRS module to the ALDL connector, one is a Brown wire, the same wire that is also connected to the SRS dash warning light, and the other wire is the SRS serial data wire, this wire is White/blue.Im not sure which ALDL pins they both connect to though. That just leaves the steering wheel, clock spring and the dash wiring which may or may not be there already,Id just strip a car that already has the SRS system fitted, then it should just be plug and play, thats if you are right about the wiring to the module under the seat already being there.....Also there are no other crash sensors anywhere around the car,the only two crash sensors are located inside the SRS module under the seat,in the event of a front end collision, these sensors have to both send a signal simultaneously to set off the airbag(s)Anyway,if it turns out that all the dash and module wiring etc is there already, then it should be pretty easy to fit up the rest of it.....

airbags are more trouble than their worth.

in the event of a MAJOR crash - they're useless.

in the event, someone miss-wires one of them, and they go off - trip to the emergency room to reset someones nose/wire their jaw.

if your serious about airbags in the cab of your ride - you might as well put some satin scatter cushions in the cab.
