ok so yesterday morning got in the car to head to uni and car is broke
would continously crank over but not start
checked all fuses and relays
not fuel pump as its only a few months old and i can hear it priming
checked for error codes
code 35 - idle speed low
code 46 - no reference signal while cranking
going off this im guessing i have an ignition problem
i booked a mobile mechanic to come and diagnose and fix for friday morning
would really appreciate your help in the meantime as mobile mechanic is not the cheapest
cheers in advance

If you have a 5l V8 it sounds the same as my problem which was the Hall-effect sensor in the distributor. Best thing to do is change the distributor which has the HES inside (~ $60 from the web). Not as difficult to replace as it looks. I priced a mobile mechanic and it was out of the question. Did it myself.
Jon
exactly as jon said, or the immobiliser but not likely
quote from mobile mechanic is $440 for supply and fit of brand new dizzy and 12 month warrantly on the work
things of this nature im more than happy to pay for the job to be done right
also the placement of the dizzy is a real bitch to get access to especially when i am not sure entirely of what needs to be done
thnks for your help...i will be sure to post back when the problem is resolved to tell if the HAS was the culprit

Hmm...must be something in the air here in Perth.
Mine did the same thing this morning...would turn over but not fire up. Fuel pump appeared to be priming OK.
Had the RAC out. There is spark but no injector pulse. Turns out there is error 46 in mine as well.
Evidentally it could be the dizzy or the ECM. Seems to be a pretty common problem with the other 5 litres on here at least.
Tow truck due shortly to take it to my mechanic. Free tow with the RAC.
I'm with you Brendo....prefer to get it done properly....not the most mechanically minded and I need the car back on the road asap.
We will have to compare notes once they're both up and running again.
I changed the Hall Effect trigger in my Wifes VR Calais 5.0lt. it cost $36 from Odin Auto Parts in Balcatta.
did the work myself, The Dizzy is near F@%king impossible to get out after 12 years not being moved!
Brand New ignition module fixed the problem...car started idled for about 10min then cut out. Started it up again and quickly drove home as i had been stranded at my girlfriends place for a week. Cut out before then end of her street when i gave it some. Then i babied it home without any problems.... Did a few full throttle runs on my street without any issues
Im thinking that maybe fuel and muck had built up in the motor as it hadnt been run for a week after trying to start it furiously last sunday...is this about right?
Anyway im getting a major service done on thursday next week so ill wait til after then to see of anything else needs fixing

Not sure that there would be a build up of muck from not starting.
Got mine back last night. Hall Effect Sensor was cactus so new dizzy in and all is good...until the next problem arises !!!
Car wouldnt start this morning
I wiped the error codes and 12 was showing meaning all good
then i got the engine running just by continually cranking. it ran for 10mins then shut off
now i have error 46 again - no refernce signal while cranking
so im going to go ahead and put a new dizzy in as well as ignition coil and that should fix it for sure yes?

same issue here someone told me it would be the moudle thing in the inner guard but there pretty expensive lol.
LIFES A GARDEN, DIG IT..lol
after exchanging my module a new one was $420 from my local parts store.
im hoping a new distibutor and coil will fix my problem
any other ideas would be appreciated

does $700 seem like a good price for supply and fit of new dizzy and coil (mobile mechanic)

Mine cost $320 for the dizzy plus 2.5 hrs labour to diagnose and replace from my mechanic (Joe at Mr Auto in Donovan St Osborne Park) and he worked until 8pm on Friday night to get it done. I also chucked him a 6 pack for the overtime !
Not sure how much a coil is worth these days.....had mine replaced about 4 years ago and it was something like $60 for the part then.
If you aren't an RAC member (can you afford not to be a member ?) and don't have access to a free tow then $700 to supply & replace both the dizzy & the coil from a mobile mechanic probably isn't too bad bearing in mind where they are in the bay and what a s*@t job it is to chaange them.
Probably doesn't hurt to change both the coil and the dizzy at the same time. At least with that and the new ignition module that you have already changed you shouldn't have any ignition problems for a while.
Mine seems to run so much better today as well. More responsive and seems to pull better through the rev range with the new dizzy.
jeez i think i might start workin as a mobile mechanic, would only need 3 or 4 jobs a week and i'd be rollin in the dollars....................
96 VS ute, L36 Auto.
Pacies, 2" catback, 18" RJR Shaddows
No more V8'S, GT35 TO GO ON SOON
problem solved....new dizzy and coil fixed the problem....also required new starter motor as the old was cactus
