Just bought the missus a VS ute and the cabin smells like petrol. Nothing seems to be leaking on the driveway and you can't smell it from outside the car. Besides the option of petrol possibly having been spilled on the carpet what else could be the culprit?
Do you smell it all the time or just when your driving?
Its only faint while driving but is pretty strong after just being started.
Check the fittings at each end of the fuel rails.
The O rings on these fittings have been known to leak.
You may see a stain where the fuel has been leaking.
PS Nice fiddyfive in your avatar!
If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?
This happens to me to man, but only once the car has been sitting for a while or overnight with windows up, and a little when the engine is cold, once it warms up it goes away, ive got no leaks or nothing (that i know of) lol
Yeah that sounds about what this one does. Only really stinks after its been sitting for ages and you start it up. Was just a bit concerned cause the missus's previous VS ute never did it
had the same problem in my ute, open the fuel hatch in the tray (big plate 20 screws or something) and re-connect all the fittings, fixed it for me.
if that dosnt fix your problem check your carbon container (black tube thingo under the bonnet) and re-connect all those fittings.
also when putting the fuel hactch back on i recommend putting down some new silicone and new screwsalso give it a good clean out
cheers, torque
Another possibility is the fuel pump or sender on the tank. Possibly the previous owner has replaced them. They have to be put back with new bolts coated with sealant. Furthermore they need the correct torque.
Too little and the gasket leaks. If overtightened, the sealant is ruptured. You can remove the access plate behind the driver's seat, or lift up the cargo floor, and feel the front of the tank where the pipes come
out to see if it is weeping petrol. But if the tank is nearly empty, it will not leak there.
Another option (which was my issue) was the fuel hoses had perished in the engine bay (on the return line in my case). The mechanic said the only time they saw it was under pressure, fixed with a cheap bit of fuel hose.

After reading this thred, I thought I would go and attack mine, and found the problem, after removing the access plate behind the drivers seat,
looking right at me was 3 hoses, 2 go to the fuel tank and the other ( smaller hose, which was cut off) is the fuel vapour line that goes from the carbon canister
to the fuel filler neck. As this was not connected Im guessing that the fuel smell, in my case, was coming from the fuel filler neck, and driving with the window down causes it to get sucked into the cabin bad bad bad. Haven't taken it for a drive yet but hoping that its fixed the problem.
Not sure if yours is the same problem but might be worth a look.
Any luck with the fuel smell?
have the same thing with my vs ute now and again, seems to have got better since i first got it yet i havnt done anything to it? dont know what it was so im no help
