    Default VS power steering

    Hey!

The power steering on my VS acclaim is making noise when the steering is turned, it's coming from the right hand side of the rack, does the system just need a good clean out/bleed or is this an indication of the rack on it's way out?

Any help is appreciated, thanks take care.

If there is no play in the rack that is excessive then just give the car a good degreasing so there is no oil on it and get it passed then, if he asks dont just say you cleaned it tell him you fixed the leak. However if you degrease it and take it for a short trip and it is then covered in power steerign fluid you have a problem. Have you checked the low pressure retuen hose they often come loose and leak where they connect to the rack. Give it a tighten, if nee dbe you may need to shorten the hose a bit if the end is damaged assuming it is long enough to do that or failing that get a new hose and clamps.

It actually wasn't brought up on my roadworthy inspection strangely enough, I'm just picky and like to fix things like this in my own time. The steering isn't heavy so the power steering is doing it's job although the noise just annoys me.

Is it a moaning sound? get some WD-40 on the steering wheel shaft. I.e. the main rod that connects the wheel to the rack. Oil up all the grommits and the connecting bits.

    Worked a treat for me!

Yeah it is. Alright I'll give that a try but the noise is coming from the right hand side of the rack, not the steering wheel shaft.

Try draining and replacing the old fluid with new Dexron III. That usually reduces the noise. If it turns out that your rack is stuffed get a good reco'd one put in and wheel alignment and it'll be sweet.

It should bleed itself through normal driving after the source of air leak has been fixed. What colour is the fluid in the reserviour ? If its not a nice light red change it.

Hmm ok so there's an air leak somewhere? Nah the power steering fluid looks fine.

If its making a moaning, groaning sound when the steering wheel is turned left or right,it comes from the bush where the steering column shaft passes through the firewall into the cabin. All that needs to be done is to spray WD40 from the engine side ,up into the area around the steering shaft bush where the shaft passes through the firewall, this will fix the moaning, groaning sound made when the steering wheel is turned. When I first bought my VS,the groaning sound was terrible.I had asked a couple of steering and suspension places about it,one said it was a worn out power steering pump, other said it was the steering rack was worn out etc. Then I read on here about spraying the WD40 into this bush to stop the moaning sound,I tried this ,not expecting any real difference, but the noise completely went away, and 2 years later, the noise hasnt come back.Ive fixed this problem on a few other peoples VS's,and they were wrapped to have it fixed so easily and cheaply after being told the same thing as me ,that it was a worn out power steering pump or rack.

Problem solved, put some WD40 on the steering wheel column and it doesn't make any noise at all, cheers for the help.
