G'day Fellas.
Just wondering what kind of sound system people are running in their vs utes?
i only have an old sony headunit and some xplod speakers.
they are past there used by date and i am looking for something nice that i can use with my ipod and put out some nice bass with too.
i don't want to spend more then 800 dollars at the very maximum.
i have seen options from slim subs behind passenger seats to in the tray next to the fuel tank to just big speakers.
if anyone had any advice for the best system for my budget please feel free. (i have no idea about sound systems)
cheers.
hi mate, i did this thread a while back but its a good idea of whats out there i guess.
vs ute sound system
mate personally i wouldnt bother with a sub.
alot of people will tell you that they are the best etc and that you cant have a good sound system without one. id suggest a good set of splits a nice headunit and amp.
budget for each new
2-300 headunit
2-300 splits
2-300 amp and wiring
this will have your ute pumping assuming you can install it yourself. if not you wont get alot for 800 dollars.
and dont be afraid to check out second hand audio gear. look on mobile electronics forum for some good gear at bargain prices.
I would definitely go against the above, you need a sub, even a smaller one.
if you had a larger budget id suggest you get a sub but not for your budget. if you want upgradability get a good powered 4 channel amp and run the speakers off 2 channels and bridge the other two channels into a sub when you can afford one.
Since you specifically mention wanting more bass, I'd suggest a new basic headunit (with 2 rca-outs, and a hpf for the speakers), then a small amp and 10" sub.
You already have aftermarket speakers, and even though they are just sony rubbish, they will be better than standard. If you cut the bass to them, and play them off the headunit you should still get some decent volume from them.
Throw in a small sub (since its only a small cab), and you have yourself a nice little upgrade.
Also, I say 2 pairs of rca's on the headunit for when you want better speakers down the track and want to run them off an amp

i squezed a 12" eclipise sub in my vs beside my tank and it was worth the trouble.
thanks for the replies fellas.
i am still unsure of what path to go down, i have a mate who works at JB in the car audio section, i think my best bet is to go have a chat to him.
this all isn't going to happen until next year until i have paid off a few other things, just planning for the future.
thanks again guys, real help.

it would appear everyone has their own idea of a bargain.
i think getting some decent splits, an amp, a sub and installation for a grand is a bargain.
but it would appear that isn't going to happen haha.
im in the same boat dont wanna spend more than $800 but i want the sub in the ute, none of this fueltank crap
will do mate i think when i get my tax return mite look at a nice set up, nothin flash or over the top just a bit of sound..the fuel tank just sounds a bit dodge
You most likely really do need to spend more than $800 for a decent set up. I'd even suggest buying it bit by bit as you can afford it and then getting the whole lot installed. I've got a bit of a mix in my ute but generally I've got 2 slimline 12 inch Kenwood subs on the rear wall behind each seat. An Alpine amp under the passenger seat (I modded the seat so it can't be moved and damage the amp) Alpine 12 stacker attached under the glove box and a Sony cd player in the dash. Not happy with the cd player so that and the subs will be getting replaced with Alpine ones in the near future.
Yes i have, ive used this thred and the sub ive purchsed has nearly the same dimensions as the one used in the thread,
VG to VS ute Subwoofer enclosure with measurements
And why would you not bother? Have you even tried this desgin before? If the holes and plate are sealed correctly i dont think there will be very much dust or water getting in there?
thanks for all the options guys.
i am going to wait until early next year when i have paid for all my schoolies and am working full time and pulling in some decent money.
at least i know i am definitely not short of ideas or a helping hand with all you guys.
cheeers fellas.
Maybe you should read that thread again, u little smart ass, if you did you would seen that i did this a long time ago before you even thought of the idea
If you dont want to listen to my advice then ,fine don't, but Holden didn't leave those drain wholes open for no reason, imagine if water had got in there and couldn't get out, would of made a nice mess, oh and by the way if you go ahead and stick down the lid with something to try and totally seal the top good luck trying to remove it when your sub blows up from moisture and dust, which it will.
