yo yo

you answerd your own question mate, the tip is gonna be 0.5 of an inch too big.
to make it fit you'd have to weld the crap out of it so it dosent leak out the sides n sound like a wet fart..

Its not going to happen, unless you have a bit of pipe going from 2.5'' in diameter to 3'' diameter. Which would be useless. If you have a proper catback exhaust with matching extractors then you shouldn't need a tip. The tip is only for looks. If it sounds good and looks tidy why bother with the bigger tip?
Current ride: 94 VR Commodore Wagon, Series 1 engine in a Series 2 body.
Wheels: VE SS 19's custom machined to fit VR.
Sound: Kenwood + matching speakers.
I had a 3 inch tip on a 2 1/4 exhaust fitted up with no dramas so you shouldn't have any issues either.
You need to be more descriptive of what tip you actually have.
There are a lot of straight and rolled tips which are adapted down to fit i.e. Your 3" to fit a 2.5" exhaust.
Stock length tailpipes need to be trimmed to look acceptable.
