Hey all, I have a bit of a problem with my 5l it still runs but I'm trying to fix all the little stuff so advice from people with experience in the matter will help me heaps. So starting off cold start first thing in the morning is fine and starting shortly after stopping say 5 mins is as well but when I leave the car for say 30 mins it will turn over for what seems like ages (5-6 secs before actual ignition begins) then start.
So Ive changed battery and when I did that it sounded like it was cranking harder but still did that same, someone said to me it could have something to do with the coolant temp sensor which seemed plausible and since I was changing radiator and thermostat I thought why not but it didn't help. So has anyone here had the problem before or knows what it could be? Someone also mentioned injectors, but reading some other threads could it be ignition module losing it? Any input is appreciated.
I would put 2 bob on weak spark. If so its prob gonna be the coil.
or dribbling injectors

Cheers guys, I had a few say drizzly injectors, say it was injectors would it be easier to just buy new ones opposed to getting them reco'd. And the coil is the on the firewall and has the main spark plug lead to the dizzy coming from it right? But why it would still cold start fine shouldn't it just do it all the time?
Sounds more like a heat soak problem which tends to be when the ignition module is on its way out. If you can borrow a module from somewhere it would be a quick and easy to install and test.
why dont ya go across the road to your neighbour and ask borrow his coil and dfi module?![]()
Thats very descriptive, do you know him? I'll look into getting another ignition module because it couldn't hurt to have a second anyway, I went through cleaning some of the contacts because most have dirt in them from the previous owner and I may have fixed it because when I expected it to do it today it didn't, just gotta see if it does it after work. And a would a 6s coil be right for an 8 then?
Whilst on this subject, how would someone go replacing the dizzy in a VS 5 litre, appears that you have to take off the inlet manifold to get to it? ? Would it be the same for the coil pack?
Yours Kindly,
Jim
Nah you dont have to take off the manifold its just shithouse positioning , you unclip the dizzy and take it out then if you can reach/see the coil take it out. But I've been told that if your replacing it a good idea is to remount it on the firewall next to the engine extending all wires etc as necessary and getting a long lead to the dizzy from auto pro or where ever, but I don't know the exact details of it.
yer ive also heard of ppl mounting the coil on the strut tower. im currently looking at doing this now
LIFES A GARDEN, DIG IT..lol
with the 5 litres, engine heat was known to cause troubles with the starter motor, making it crank really slowly when it was warmed up. Later models had a heat shield between the starter and the motor to fix this, but quite commonly its just a corroded starter solenoid that gets agitated when it gets hot and expands, check round there.
Ah thanks, I'll have a look when I get a chance, but as for cranking it doesn't really seem to crank slower, to explain it like a retard it'll go duh duh duh duh duh duh with I think about 2~3 a second but that might be slower than what it usually is/supposed to be.

After hearing the orgin suggestion, i would recommend the injector overhaul. Failing that try the coil idea.
We'll Ive put in a new coil and it didn't help, runs a bit better but still does it. So looks like injectors are the problem so when I've got some more moolah to spare I'll get them tested/reco'd. Thanks everyone I'd say this is just about case closed.
how'd you go with this mate, have exactly the same prob
Right well I fixed it I got another set of injectors second hand, but never got around to getting them reco'd because of ACT shops over charging due to lack of competition. But changing the injectors worked. It has started right away 2 times it should have just cranked heaps, so I'm not 100% on it being fixed but I'd say it is.
