    Default L3 Dash conversion problem

guys,i did the L3 dash conversion today, everything works fine, but the lights in the instrument cluster don't work. The lights work in the trip computer function thingy, and the hazard lights perfectly.
I used the Calais loom out of a wreck(changed the whole thing out),but i couldn't use the Executive A/C button or rear demister button,as there is not any wiring for them on the calais loom???will i need to make up a patch loom for those switches?
Ive checked fuses, bulbs, etc, but their all good

The calais loom will not work correctly at all. The Exec dash loom has a sheilded wire in the loom for the light dimming.

Take the L3 loom out and cut the 4th plug out of the loom and graft it into your L2 loom. All will work then. I've made about 80 patch looms now and PM me if you need some help..

Your going to have to backtrace with a multimeter and see where the power for the lights in the cluster come from.

When i did mine i just spliced into the existing loom with a diagram someone made up here. So much easier and you know all the wires work. There was only like 4 wires that needed to be spliced into the extra plug that goes to the L3 cluster.

Your kidding its that simple? I wanted to put a L3 dash and the electronic climate control into my exec from a berlina, and i went in the direction of changing the whole wiring harness/ I could have just taken that short cut?

If you want the climate control - it's best to go with the full loom change over.

If you just want the level 3 cluster - modify the Exec loom by adding the the 4th plug and switchblock plug into the loom.

ok,so i pulled the calais loom back out, stripped out as much of the loom wiring out for the trip/L3 gear, all i do is follow the destructions from the Trippin' thread?
Can i put that L3 plug close to where it was originally in the L3 loom, and place the Trip loom close to where it originally was,or do i need to join both those together, then tap into the L2 dash loom????

where it says to join black/white trace wire to the grey plug,i have 2 black/white trace wires coming off connector 4;on the tripin' diagrams, they are both tee'd onto the same wire-any thoughts?

From the tripin thread if you look it says terminal 1...that is looking at the diragram top left of the connector wire with the big 1 beside it maybe later models had another negative but both black wires will negative.....I think the black wire in terminal 18 might be straight black without a white trace but they both are negative so just choose one and tee off one.

Yes it was this diagram i went off a few years ago. From memory there were a couple of wires that were completely different but it wasnt hard to work out.

yeah,i took a punt and tee'd both black/white traces off-everything works sweet, just gotta hook up wire to ECM tonight for the fuel stuff.
    3 problems-
1-the light behind temp gauge is not real bright, and the contacts look like they have arced out at some stage.Any ideas how to fix that ?
2-Fuel gauge seems to stick if the car has sat for a couple of hours-any ideas?
3-The "PWR" button indicator isn't lighting up in the cluster(bulb is good, contact is good, even put new bulb in)-any thoughts?
Sorry for hasseling you guys so much.Im going to wreckers this Sat to get another L2 & L3 dash loom to do it neater,as my L2 loom has had a brown/white trace wire bypassed off the 1st dash connector, with a 5mm wire,to the connector down near the fuse box,for some unknown reason(my fuse box is rather R/S-has burnt out at some stage too)

that extra wire you need to run to the ECM(the yellow wire),my executive already has the yellow and black wire on the ecm loom, and runs up into the wiring loom behind the dash;so all i have to do is connect the black/yellow wire on the L3 Patch Loom to the Yellow/Black wire on that big Grey Plug???could someone verify this for me?

It must be connected to the Engine loom plug yellow black. Some cars have this yellow black in it already - I've only seen 1 in 30 odd. So yes if it's in the A2 spot on the engine loom plug - splice into that wire.

On a different note,i managed to get most of the Cruise Contol gear out of a wreck yesterday;i did a search and got few drawings/destructions(markovr is a legend),printed off the dealer fitment guide and have been following it.
So far, everything is done, just need the 2nd brake switch, drill hole in firewall and patch into the wiring(i actually grabbed a Genuine GMH patch lead and didn't relise it-P/No 92046987),on the dealer fitment guide it says something about fitting a MID Series BCM,but then it also tells you how to patch onto the LOW Series BCM,so i just need to following the patch guide and it will all be sweet???,or do i need to change out the BCM??I wont be using the cruise till i get the other brake switch

Depends how you did the loom...you cant use just a l3 loom and swap it over with the l2 loom due to a couple of dramas....one is the dimming circuit for the dash lights as on a l2 it uses a resistance wire taped up in the loom to drop the voltage down to dim the dash lights.....on a l3 loom it doesnt use any resistance wire as the dimming is done through the bcm . If you put a l3 loom where a l2 loom was as a straight swap it wont work and you wont have any dash lights.
The other problems are to do with the heated rear window and of course the climate control/air conditioning which are wired differently.
If you followed the directions in the trippin thread and stripped the wiring out of the l3 loom and attached them to a l2 loom you wouldnt have to modify any of the dash lighting so it should work as it did before unless you have blown a fuse 16 or fuse 1

i did mine without the connectors with a solderin iron and heaps of thin wire. piece of cake if you know what you are doing and where everything goes. even a colour blind person would have little trouble following the diag.
