Clamps make it easier but as said you can always undo the shocks and get them out that way.

So what if you were doing the fronts is there a way around it without clamps?

so if i was changing out a stock strut and spring for a lowered strut and spring the clamps would be needed

Actually, you can do the front without spring compressors.. simply remove the top shock nut with car still on ground, when you jack it up, all the weight will come off the spring and uncompress it. lowered springs generally dont need spring compressors to install onto the struts. Personally have not tried it but cant see why it wouldnt work this way

With the rears, undo the bottom shock bolt, usually easier than attempting the top bolt. I found that it's easier to jack the bottom of the shock ever so slightly (makes it a little easier to undo), and to also have a friend stand with their foot on the rotor applying a little downward pressure to stop the shock from compressing when undoing the bolt.

When I tried to undo the top bolt of the shock instead, the shock just spun (like undoing a nut without holding onto the bolt-head).
