Hey guys.
I have a VN/VP ABS LSD diff. Can i put this in my VS? Will the track length be the same as the stock unit? My car isn;t can isn't ABS, is that a problem?

Haha, i was at work trying to type when the boss wasn't looking. The car is live axle and the new diff is live axle.
My question is, is the track width different from VN to VS? Also, can you put an ABS equipped diff into a non ABS car?
Your vs is actually a live axle esteem isn't it? Assuming it is, and the vn/vp diff you have is also a live axle diff from a sedan (not wagon or ute), then yes it will bolt straight in with the same mounts and track width etc. The only thing different is the hubs on the abs diff will have an electrical plug for the abs sensor that you simply wont use. I've done this just recently, only in reverse. Fitted a live axle abs vs diff to a vn ss.
oops, your new post came up quicker than it took me to respond...
Oh cool, thanks. I used to have another diff in this car that was considerably shorter than standard, i believe it was from a VL Turbo, but the seller told me it was from a VN SS. Ebay also lists diffs as either VN VP or VR VS so i'm quite confused.
Yes VL turbo diffs are much shorter (like the VN Grp A) which can be fitted to run rims with a very big offset. The quoted track width of a vn is approx 12mm (6mm either side) narrower than a vs but as far as I know it is not a different in the diff that creates this. Did you have trouble with the inside scrubbing running the VL diff?
Yep, the black scrub marks don't lie, it also looked odd, i'm running 235 wide tyres. Ah well 6mm either side is nothing, the VL diff is about 30mm short i think?
Do you happen to know the actual length of the VN diff? I'll compare it to the VS book. Thanks.
VS track width is quoted at 1491mm and VN is 1478mm (so 13mm difference). As far as I know though this is measured from centre to centre of the tread, therefore the body of the diff is the same, just a different track width from slightly greater offset in the rims. Hope that makes sense
Are you sure the offset of the rims come into it? I would think the measurement would be independent of the type of wheels fitted.
I cant say that for sure, but these figures are correct with the respective factory fitted 14x6 (vn) and 15x6 (vs) steel rims. I always understood track with to be measured as I said. If you're not in too much of a rush to know exact diff measurements I could measure a vn diff housing on the weekend.
I'll probably just go to the wreckers and get some measurements. Thanks mate.
A VN diff will bolt up to a VR/VS but is about half an inch narrower.I had to fit a diff out of my wrecked VN into my VS just for a few days until I could track down another VR/VS diff.It did the job, just looks stupid being narrower, especially with the standard 15 " chaser rims fitted, and it also upset the handling of the car a bit.But apart from being narrower, the diffs look exactly the same.I didnt even notice any difference between them until I had already fitted it.I thought they would have all been the same VN to VS.Later I found out holden slightly increased the track width from VR onwards.
