    Default Strange Sump leak, after water Pump change

    Hi
    94/berlina{vr}

    I just changed the water pump, as it was leaking water, it all seemed to go well,I left the gasketglu to set over night, I poured water into the radiator today to see if there was any leaks around the pump,
    And I witnessed a water fall coming from my block area, around the crankwheel/sump gasket.

    unfortunatly the light was fading and I ran out of time, but it really did look like it was coming out of the block/sump join. Anyone have any ideas?

    I'd remove the waterpump again and check all the old gasket was removed before installing the new pump....just one small piece left behind can cause a bad leak.

    I changed a waterpump yesterday actually, took me 4 hours, because I had to do it twice. We got a piece of shit chinese gasket made of paper, and once we ripped everything off and put the new stuff on, we filled it up and before even starting the car and pressurising the system, it was PISSING coolant from the top of the water pump where it joins the block. Turns out the crappy gasket had a TINY tear in it, and so leaked water out. In the end i had to get a sheet of gasket paper, peel the gasket back off and use it as a template to cut a new gasket. Put it all back on and perfect, no leaks.

    Check your gasket.

    I cant be 100% sure yet, I didnt get a chance to have a good look. But I think its unrelated to the water pump. Well when I say unrelated, I mean it not currently leaking at the water pump, but it may have been caused by me changing the water pump.

    I would have to agree with hako, I will put money on it leaking from behind the water pump and running down the front of the engine. The gasket can move when putting it on too and cause a leak.

    I can confirm, the water pump seal is pefect, no leakage from there, The leak seems to come from just above the sump, dripping from behind/next to the crank wheel.
    Is there a welsh plug around this location?

    So you took the pump off and put a new gasket on?

    There are no core plugs down there. The only thing that can leak in that area is above it. Either the water pump, the bottom radiator hose or the heater hose. I still think it is the water pump gasket not sealing properly.

    I stand corrected, you were bang on the money, the gasket had slipped up, luckly it wasnt ruined by the water pump blades, Im still amazed, I was stareing under the water pump for ages, and I couldnt see anything, the only way I confirmed it was the water pump was by putting a rag underneath for a few seconds and it was drenched, it must have been that invisable water
