My vs crunches a fair bit when shifting hard into second or downshifting.
Im assuming this is the syncho for second gear going but being my first manual, i dont really know where to go from here. Can the synchros just be replaced? or do i look for a new box i have no idea haha.
Cheers for any advice![]()
Some say less talk more action. But I rekon more torque less traction!
try some new decent gearbox oil. it helped mine alot
Ah sweet will do what oil are you running?
Bear in mind it is a getrag not a t5![]()

My T5 does exactly this, even running on Dex 3. It grinds so bad sometimes, makes me angry. I just rip it into second, once it blows that'll justify the new box.
Getrag's run 75-85w gear oil. Penrite make a gear oil in this viscosity that I run in mine and its excellent. They hold just a bit under 2 litres from memory. Dextron 3 (auto trans fluid) which the T5's run is only recommended in the Getrag box when its well worn and still noisy or crunching with the correct gear oil.
Hey mate was at the mechanic today about worn synchro. I got a supra box in a vl turbo and shifting into first pops out unless i downshift from second.
Mechanic claims it is just a worn synchro as it is meant to be a tough as nails gearbox.
He quoted approx 1000 to replace a worn synchro. Mainly due to the labour involved, parts would cost sweet FA.
I am sure if you hunt around you will get it much cheaper, bear in mind if cost of replacing synchro in your gearbox is going to cost you similar to upgrading it, you may as well take the plunge and get a new one.
Apart from an oil change, check the clutch adjustment and operation.
If the clutch doesn't release correctly it will cause the gears to crunch a bit, mostly on the down shift.
If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?
