Ok so the other day i was driving to tafe, i exited the freeway and at the lights my car started to make a clanging sound (like it has a flat spot), i turned the corner hoping i could get to tafe and then sort out the problem, just as i turned into the tafe car park the power steering, brakes, alternator, etc all stopped working, apart from the motor itself.
after stopping and having a look under the bonnet, i found the Fan Belt had shredded off. but the wierd thing was that the Power steering pully had come off too. not broken off but simple the bolts had undone and it fell off,(hence the clanging sound as it was coming loose). the nuts on the pully were fine so i got some more bolts and a new fan belt. the car is now fine.
but im wondering if this has happened to anyone before and how the hell it happened?
also i was wondering if this could have caused any faults with the power steering? it seems a bit heavier to turn than usual and it makes quite alot of groaning noises when it turns.

no never heard of it, unless someone forgot to tighten them properly, groaning noises are either the bearings from the steering wheel shaft going through the firewall or there is air in the lines that the power steering fluid goes through. Is your ps tank full of oil? Checked for leaks?
The groaning is a separate issue. Spray some silicone spray into the rubber grommet in the firewall.
The power steering pulley came off which caused the belt to throw off. Also when there's no belt there's no accessories, power steering, alternator or water pump. The motor will continue to run but don't, as it will quickly overheat.
Only heard of it one time before. Re the groaning noise when turning - spray the grommet in the firewall where the steering column goes thru - the seal there goes dry and groans....very common. Best access is from under the car.

I'd bet whoever last changed your water pump didn't do up the power steering pulley bolts properly !!
