    Default Here's how it is...

My car has done a flex plate, I need to remove the transmission and would like to do it before I pick the item up next week.
Is there anything I need to know before I put my 1980 jack stands underneath the car, I dread the thought of the car falling on me, also I'm not capable of getting out fast enough as I have back problems.

Can anyone indicate a safe place to place the jackstands to safely remove the transmission or this to risky? should I be borrowing some ramps instead ?

Been holding it off for this factor and the weather has been shit, but my disk rotors are getting rusty and I can't leave the car any longer to rust, cause I love it.

Also is there anything I need to know before I start pulling bits apart, im aware of having bricks behind the wheels before I remove the driveshaft etc, is there anything important I need to be aware of and does the engine mounts need to come out?

I want it to go as smooth as possible as I get really flustered real easy and do not have the money to get someone else to do this for me.

Anything would be good help, thanks.

hey mate jack stands will be fine to do the jobs. failing this or you feeling unsafe with just them. get some stock wheels and jack the car up and rest the cars wheels onto the rims of the spare tyres.

and if you are using stands put them on the crossmember just behind the front wheels and at the back on the diff. its easier with the whole car up.

you should drain the transmission fluid before you pull it out or you will have a big puddle of trannsmission fluid when it tips and comes out the output shaft.

you dont need to remove the engine mounts but you should use another jack or a block of wood etc to keep the motor in place and not tiliting back once you remove the gearbox as this can damage your engine mounts from excessive movement.

thats all i can think of at the moment. if anyone else can add anything else.

i removed the the engine and trans in one hit and split them apart on the floor this way i did the whole job bye my self, i also had a engine crain and air tools etc. i also reseled the sump while i was at it because it was leaking too much.

i replaced the torque converter but that was a second part of the main job of the sump.

if you do take the trans out of the car while its in the car i would suggest making up a cradle to go in to a trolley jack so you are not lifting the trans, they are very heavy

Make sure the car is high enough off the ground if you want to pull the trans out from under it.

Very good advice, seems obvious in hindsight but have been caught once with another vehicle.
