Hi got a problem with the electric mirrors suddenly not working in my vr berlina, they used to work fine before, and i have checked all the fuses and everything seems fine. I had thought that maybe the switch stuffed up, so went to the wreckers and i got another 2 switches just in case, anyway with both switches fitted still the mirrors arent working, then i tested the loom for which the mirror switch plugs into and there is no power at any of the wire terminals...so i am now unsure of what to do, does anyone have any ideas for what i should check????
anyone have any suggestions????
Might be dirty switches. Some WD40 might help on the switches?
BUMP....refreshing thread, problem still isnt fixed and its giving me the sh!ts. Does anyone have any suggestions, as i stated previously i have no power at all in the loom, so it isnt a problem with dry switches, and all fuses seem to check out ok.
Find where the power should be coming from and check you have power at the source, then track it through the circuit to find where you loose it.
The fuse that feeds the power mirrors is fuse 11 on a VS wiring diagram,I guess the VR would be similar. The fuse number 11 is fed from a pink wire that runs to the ignition switch. The cruise control, if you have it, is also powered from the same fuse.So if the cruise is working, you know its a problem between the fuse box and the power window switch and mirror motors.Being fed power from the ignition switch,Id say it would only have power available at the switch plug when the ignition switch is in the on position.Try testing it for power with the ignition key on if you havent already..

Did you end up testing for power at the switch connector with the ignition key on?And was power available at fuse 11?
yes when i did test for power at the switch there was no power at all, and that is with the key switched on. I also checked the fuses and they were all fine, and i tested them with the test light to make sure i had power on both sides of the fuse. Today was a wet day here in melbourne and i didnt get a chance to look it over again, but i did check the condition of the loom and rubber grommet through the door and all checks out fine, with no damage.
It has to be a break in the power wire that runs through the door loom then if theres power to both sides of the fuse..Ive got a similar problem with the original door speaker on the drivers side .It would stop working whenever the door was opened or closed. It doesnt work at all any more.I will replace the door loom one day.
Thanks mate, when the weather is good and i get another chance i will check out the loom proparly. cheers
Ok i have tested the car again. I have power on both end of fuse 11 which is for the electric mirrors, power windows ect. The power windows work, and the car doesnt have cruise control, its been dis-connected, but the mirrors have worked since then. Anyway i took the door trim of, and there is no power at all in the pink wire, in fact there is still no power at any of the wires which go to the switch. Then i checked the pink wire under the rubber gromet as it comes through the door and there is no power there either. Then i checked under the dash and found the pink wire which goes through another big black connector with other wires, and there is power on both sides of this connector block, so obviously power is lost some where between this block and where it goes to the door. So im thinking of runing a new pink wire from the block to the switch, and what about the other wires? Do you`se think i should just run a new pink wire and that may fix my problem, im thinking so.
I'd unplug the black connector and green plug just where it connects in the right hand side kick panel and pull it through the door and have a look at the wiring to see which part of it needs soldering up again.
The wiring can get damaged where it feeds through the door (from opening and closing) and just where it enters into the door body, it can catch on the door striker if the door wiring loom isnt secured down with the right zip ties etc.
Even if you run a new wire, you will probably need to pull the door harness off so the new wire can be fed through the black grommet, so I'd be looking at the existing wiring first.
True, well its a bigger job then i initially thought. I cant see any damage to the loom where it goes through the door, and nothing leading upto the switch, and it is all cable tied in as well. Just curious though, should any other wire light up when i test it? Or does it need power from the pink to work, cause it seems weird out of the 5 or so wires there is no power there at all. Anyway i think you are right and the best way to do it is to pull that section of the loom out, and have a look at it proparly. Just it will be a bit hard trying to pull it all out.
Could be under the rubber grommet, under some tape etc. You dont know whats been done with it before. Its not a hard job to pull out, especially if the door trim is off.
There are about 2-3 plugs and cable ties that hold the door loom to the door. If possible, use some pliers to squeeze the tabs together and pull it off the door so it can be reused. Once this has been taken off, then pull the kick panel wiring out through the door jamb and once this is free, pull the door wiring out through the door jamb as well.
