    Angry VR Immobliser

ok guys, im getting very annoyed with my vr. It recently started to not start everytime, all the lights n such will come on, u go to start the car and nothing, battery is fine, starter motor is fine etc. i got the keyhead replaced today, worked fine until tonight, and it started not working again. Iam wondering if it could be the immobiliser?

when i unlock the doors the indicators n such flash twice as said in the manual, however wen i lock the doors i dont get any flash of the indicators or anything, it worked properly wen i brought the car bout 4 months ago and im fairly positive that it started to not flash when the key problem started. Iam wondering of this means there is a loose wire or sumtin to do with the immobliser or the security system. can anyone help me out here? is there certain fuses to the immoblisers that could be worn out?

If it doesn't start first time, try jiggling the gear lever in park and turning the car on at the same time (assuming it's an auto).

Im sure the flashes when locking/unlocking means the security system is working ok,and a lack of flashes means something is stuffed somewhere or an error code has set in the BCM.My VS flashes twice when unlocking, and once when locking,I assume the VR would be the same. You might have to see someone (holden) and get them to plug a Tech 1 scantool in and see if any trouble codes are present in the BCM which controls the security systems. On a VS the BCM (HIGH series) can be reset by removing the fuel pump fuse under the bonnet for 1 second. This might be worth a try.If not, maybe try removing the battery terminal for a couple of minutes to see if that clears it at all.

Do a error code scan using-
    Checking error codes VR/VS (Revised)
    as a guide.
you dont need to go to Holden to get them to do it as they will charge $$$.
Error code 31 basicly says there is an issue with your immobiliser.
However you have to do the search for codes Before you disconnect the battery, as that will wipe any codes stored.
I had to replace the BCM (Body Control Module) In my wifes VR for immobiliser reasons.
I also had to replace the one in my VS for a bad earth.
The BCM is where the immobiliser is located, & if you have to replace it, it will cost around $350 plus new key heads, as they can't be reprogrammed.

You can not "flash up" the BCM error codes the same way as you can with the ECU by bridging the ALDL connectors and flashing the codes up on the check engine light..You need a scantool that can acess the BCM which controls the security systems. The BCM stores error codes just like the ECU does when theres something wrong with one of its systems. The SRS and ABS systems also store error codes when something goes wrong with their systems. The ABS error codes can be flashed up on some models as well as the ECU codes.I havent heard of anyone flashing up SRS airbag or BCM error codes though. It usually has to go to holden or someone with the right scantool to get the SRS or BCM systems tested or checked for error codes etc.

ye, the flashes are the same with vr, it will flash twice when unlocking but wont flash when locking, im thinkin that this mean be a loose/broken wire or fuse or something which isnt engaging the immobiliser properly. some days it will work perfectly fine all day and then others it will not work at all, like 50/50. ill do the test and disconnect the battery to the immobiliser.

just wondering, if the immobiliser is reset can that be the simple fix? i am also going to check all the fuses in the engine bay fusebox as well as the ones under the steering wheel, it couldnt hurt to make sure there all in good condition.

    thanks guys, much appreciated

the ecu will give a basic code 31 to tell you there is a problem with the immobiliser.
the reason you do an error code search is to see if it is showing as faulty.
onca a fault has bee detected, you can then take it to GMH, just tryin' to avoid the senario, "there's nothing wrong with the immobiliser. That'll be $300!".

On my VR,it is the 2 lil steel plate things in front of the key barrel aren't contacting the Aerial Knob on the keyhead, sometimes it starts first go,other times you turn it back off the place a bit of pressure on the keyhead onto the barrel things and it starts.I did have trouble with the Auto Inhibitor switch, replaced that, now just need to sort out the barrel thing.
Also check your codes,it will come up with Code 31-Theft Deterrant or something like that

This is what the gregorys workshop manual says about the error code 31.
("Code 31 will set when the BCM does not return a signal to the ECU when the ignition is switched to the on position to permit operation of the injectors. When this code is present there will be a one second delay in starter motor operation when the ignition key is turned to the start position").
Usually when there is a problem with either the ignition key,the key reader, the BCM or immobiliser, the engine wont even attempt to crank over at all,(the whole point of the immobiliser!),it would be no good just having a one secod delay in starter motor operation..Ive read a lot of stuff on here about error code 31 and I dont really think anyone knows 100% exactly what causes it.Some say its the ignition key, others say its the BCM,then others say its the security system.Ive had code 31 set on my car (VS) a few times, dont know what caused it,but the car still started albeit with the one second delay mentioned in starter motor operation. The security system was still all working fine with indicators still flashing when locking/unlocking and doors all still locking/unlocking remotely.
