my alternator has developed an annoying squeak that the good old wd 40 stops for about 5 mins then it gets squeak happy again (i just gave it a quick spray around the bolt in the pully a few times but reoccurred 5 mins later)
question is are the bearings in them an easy job to replace diy
or is it easier to just get a replacement alternator (if so would a vt-vy one go in no probs ?)
any help would be great

Just get a new or good second hand one as there worth gold, All ecotecs are the same.
its pretty easy if ya know what you are doing, remove alternator, put in vice and remove the 4 through bolts, remove the voltage reg, seperate the 2 halves, remove nut from pulley, remove rotor from housing, remove the 4 screws holding the bearing plate on the housing and knock out bearing and replace, then you have to replace the bearing on the rotor which can sometimes be removed by putting the rotor in a vice and using 2 large screwdrivers to prise the bearing off or you could use a bearing plate thing and a workshop press to remove it.
If WD40 Stops It... Use Silicon Spray... You Can Also Use It On Slipping/Squeaking Serpentine Belts (Fan Belts) etc...
If All Else Fails, Buy A Reco One For About $99..
just thought id update
sprayed it with some silicone spray (was a can in the garage as predicted luckily the first can i picked up lol)
and it hasnt squeaked at all for the last few weeks
so that saves buying a replacement for now as it still charges at a healthy 14.2 volts
thanks again to everyone who contributed to the thread
mines doing the same thing ever since i pulled the alternator bracket off. but maybe its a bearing. what silicon stray did u use?

If it is a bearing and you use silicone spray or WD40 to quiten it, remember that it will only be a temporary fix....and Murphy says it will fail completely in the middle of a dark raining night a long long way from home.

I have the same problem with my VS calais series 2. sprayed it with WD40 and it goes away for most of the day. found an article it say that a squealing alternator can have 5 possible causes, worn out belt, bearing worn in alternator, incorrect belt tension, contamination of the belt (water, oil, dirt,) worn or defective tensioner pulley. The Cause of a Squealing Alternator Pulley | eHow.com I just had the alternator installed from the wreckers 3 months ago, so it didn't quite make 3 months. the person who installed it say it was a vt alternator. how would i go about identifing what bearings the alternator needs and where am i able to buy them from. tried using a search engine and putting in the cars details but couldn't find them that way.

I need some statesman/ calais woodgrain for drivers side panel!!
I thought mine was squeaking. It only happens for about 10mins at start up. So i replaced it and it still squeaks. Funny thing is, i have only 2 things left that could do it, water pump or air con. But i swear black and blue it was coming from the alt area.
I would change the bearing asap & reco it or get a new Alternator.
It needs to spin freely and charge the battery.
Had this happen so many times at work tell the customer you need to change the alternator they just ignore the advise
sure enough they are back with in a month or two.
In cases like this, you may find that the alternator is OK and the squeak is coming from the pulley - they wear and get shiny as does the serpentine belt plus the alt pulley is very small and carries a heavy load especially after starting when the alt must work hard to put back the electrical energy that the battery used to start the car. Spraying with WD40/silicone oil may stop the sqeak or replace the belt which costs under $30 - don't always assume it is the bearing. Squeaks are good earners for some mechs.

I replaced the alt. Have also replaced the power steering pump, tensioner pulley, and both idler pulleys. The only 2 things left could be water pump and air con, but it defiantly sounds like its coming from the alt even tho its a different one.
