OK have had enough with the gearbox and want to know what is up with it. I believe it's a standard box how ever it refuse to down shift manually. As in at the lights at 40 chuck it into 1st it just clunks and goes into gear. Driving normally there is no issue. Any ideas what it could be? The oil and every thing is fine and it shifts great in D. Also if I have it in 1st and power mode on it will bounce off the limter and slam into 2nd after a little bit. Is that normal?

STOP Using The Gear Selector To Shift!! ONLY Use Low Gears When Under Load (Up Or Down A Hill Or Towing etc.. NEVER 1st While In Motion Either) Same With The Power Button (Under Load Or Towing...) >>IT'S NOT GOING TO WIN YOU ANY RACE OFF THE LIGHTS, BY USING THE POWER BUTTON..<<
????? Seriously Fella, What Are You Thinking..??

If Your Transmission Doesn't Shift Down A Gear When Braking For Future Reference... Adjust The Kick-Down On The Throttle Cable...
Take it easy, I know he never uses the gear selector to shift, leaves it in D all the time. Were he said his put it in first etc was to help try an diagnose the what could be wrong with it, if your rolling at say 40km an down shift to 2nd it clunks an then goes into neutral, well thats what it feels like it does..

sounds like the trans is stuffed. With 4L60E equipped cars the PCM will shift the auto to 2nd at the right RPM even if locked in first. it's a safety feature. you could try having the transmission flushed which may solve the shift problem, or it may not.

Auto trans don't down shift for engine braking purposes, that requires you to manually shift the transmission.
the power button changes the shift pattern of the auto box, it will hold it in gear longer, it will down shift faster(when applying throttle), it increases the line pressure somewhat and won't lock the converter as quickly so the engine doesn't labour. this is important if towing.
i always keep the trans in power mode. it doesn't use any more gas so it doesn't bother me and the transmission shifts more to my liking and the engine doesn't labour (bloody ecotecs just don't have low rpm pulling power like the buick does)

Yeah I don't often put it into 1st I was just bored one day and did it and it refused to rev out just clunked. The weird part is in day to day driving it's perfectly fine and shifts smooth. A transmission place said there is something called the downshift clutch or something but if that was gone you would think the car would have issues shifting even in drive.
