    Default VS Diff Ratio Identification

    Hi All

Well after a few years, I am back into the Commodore world. I have just purchased a VS BT1. It is in awesome condition concidering it used to be fanged around by coppers. Anyway its a 5.0L with IRS. The guy I bought it from told me he just replaced the diff with one from a VY. I want to find out the diff ratio and I am hoping its not like the old Banjo diffs, where the only way to ID them was to pull them out and check the internal markings.

Do the VY diffs have any markings on the outside, showing what ratio the diff is? I ask because the take off is not the quickest, but once its moving it flys and keeps on flying!! I want to see what the ratio is, as I am concidering a change.

Thanks, and its great to be back into the Commi world!!

You can just replace the gears, so no way to check from any tag.

Jack the car up, put a mark on the tail shaft and spin the tyre 1 full rotation while counting how many times the tail shaft rotates. ie tail shaft should rotate 3.08, or 3.46, or 3.73, 3.9, or 4.11 times. I normally find it easier to do 2 full wheel rotations and half the tailshaft rotations.

If you want to remove the diff cover, spin it and it should be stamped on the crown wheel, if not, mark on the crown wheel and start counting the teeth, then (this is tricky for some people) count how many teeth are on the pinion. Divide these numbers together, then you have your diff ratio.
