my vs series II executive (auto) has just had a new engine and gearbox installed by me at home. its running better than the other motor, spits out only fault code 12 which is "no faults", but when i hang a right hand turn on it, the motor RPM and power levels fluctuate and the car begins to hunt. if i keep holding the turn (which is well within normal speeds) the motor will die all together. WTF... i think it has something to do with fuel supply or ignition... what else makes a motor stop?
Any shared knowledge is much appreciated
Cheers
Sometimes a fuel pickup problem with these cars can be caused by the fuel return line that goes to the swirl pot inside the fuel tank. The swirl pot is the thing the fuel pump "picks up" the fuel out of,it sits on the bottom of the fuel tank. The fuel return line is supposed to empty back into this swirl pot to keep it at a constant level as you go around corners etc.Sometimes this return hose can come off,or even be broken off or left off by some bodgey mechanics/people when replacing the fuel pump.Id check this returen line is connected to the pump assembly and to the swirl pot itself. You will have to run the car very low on fuel to do this,or syphon it out first..If the return line has been broken or removed from the swirl pot,it might be easier to get another fuel tank from the wreckers instead of mucking around trying to repair it..
my wagon did this, new tank fixed it

How did you resolve your problem?
keep the tank more then 1/4 full
As Said swirl pot is normally the Issue and it is easier to replace the tank with a good one from the wreckers.
Ahhhh forgot about this thread. I did find the culprit, it was the fuel filter. it hadn't been changed since the car left the factory i reckon, as it still had that protective stuff that they spray the belly of the car with. So doin the math, that filter had rolled over 230 000km of earth over 14yrs. I cut it open to see how it was and i will never forget the amount of gunk that thing had trapped, i just wiped my finger down it and it covered in black/dark green paste. $12.95 and 30min later i was tearing up a roundabout to check the symtom had definately gone and it was indeed! Hope this helps any trouble shooting for anyone else
A lot of people seem to forget about the fuel filter as its tucked up under the rear of the car out of sight.Ive seen quite a few just like what you have explained.Unbelieveable.I change mine every second oil change or every 10,000 k's.For $10 or thereabouts, why would you not..
