Hey guys,
Just wondering if i could have a bit of advice as to my best options with fixing a few things on my car that i got defected for.
I don't know whether i am better off fixing/replacing these things myself, or taking it to a mechanics (or somewhere else), or half half.
Would really appreciate some opinions
Forst of all, i got defected for:
Rear reflectors need replacing,
Exhaust needs tightening (new hangers),
Rear speakers need to be secured as speakers are bigger than the hole,
Right high beam not as bright as left,
Horn is too hard to push (???),
and blue rego lights need to be white, which i have already replaced with white LED's.
I'm pretty sure i can do most of these things myself, although i have never done them before,
Are these things easy enough to do myself or should i be taking it to a mechanic?
Cheers.
**UPDATE**
So on Monday i took it into the mechanic, who called me later on to tell me its going to cost around $1500.00 to get it to road worthy.
A lot of small problems, adding up to one big amount basically, plus all bushes are borderline and need replacing, that didn't help.
So by the end of this week i should be very broke but back on the road.
Ps, he looked once at my reflectors and said "what the #### was this cop on? He wrote that they are white and need to be replaced, they are MEANT to be white!"
He said there wasn't a spec wrong with anything on my tail lights.
Go figure huh?

iirc the rear reflectors are part of the tail light, so thats replace tail light.
have a look under the car and see which hangers are loose and you could just bend them up a bit to make it tighter.
where are the rear speakers mounted?
ummm check the globes in the headlights, and swap them from side to side to see if the problem is globe related. if it is, get new globes.
horn too hard to push sounds pretty crap to me. just leave it.
The faded part on the taillights, remind me which bit they are? Are they the reverse light bit?
Get another pair of reflectors from Hella and stick those on, its a hell of a lot cheaper than changing taillights.
shit australia has a backwards system. In NZ our cars are inspected every 6 months by qualified mechanics, while in Aus it just seems you get randomly inspected by pc plod because he thought he could make a buck off you.
Mmm.. i'm not happy about our system at all.
In NSW you need the equivelent of a RWC every year to renew your registration.
I think that something along the lines of that would show a massive improvement in the quality of cars on our roads,
But at the same time i get a friggen canary for some of the stupidest things i've ever heard about, like my car is a danger to the road or something when it passed 2 road worthies already in the past year from two different mechanics.
Everyone is laughing at all the laws regarding Victoria's roads and lisences.
Oh well, i wont complain,
Ill just get it all fixed and make sure my horn is never too hard for a cop to push again
...idiots.
You can paint the reflector with "Specialty Aerosol Lens and Bulb Dye" - costs about $20 and you just mask around the reflector and give it a 2 second spray. Or you can buy red glass paint and brush it on. The dim headlight will be due to a bad earth on that side of the car - check the earth cable (black). The busted exhaust hangers will be the rubber hangers which eventually fail - cost a few dollars and available from any exhaust shop. Bolt the speakers in or remove them. The horn problem may have been due to where the inspector pressed the cover - need to press on the outer edge.
All the defects you got busted for are justifiable - remember the copper was only doing his job.

just ask some dudes on here if they live close to if you can have their old tail lights if they have swapped theirs for other ones and kept them.
wow that sentence to me sounded weird.
No clue man..
I know everyone says this but i am a sensible driver.
It was peak hour traffic on the Princes Highway, i turned down Corrigan Rd on my way home, stopped at the stop sign, saw that it was clear and took off, i hadnt even hit 25Km's before their lights were on and they were cutting through lanes to get to me.
My car is a 93 VR S, in a very nice condition. Not "hotted up" or falling to pieces, so i honestly don't see why they would have targeted me.
If it had of been midnight then i could understand, but it was around 5 ish on a Friday afternoon i think.
I respect their job and i understand that certain laws have to be made, but they obviously had the choice to defect me, or give me a warning, and i, someone who has never lost their lisence, been done for "hooning" or even got a friggen speeding ticket in my life, don't feel that these few small things that needed fixing warrented a defect.
BUT i don't want to turn this forum into a big argument of roadworthy-ness, so i have copped it, will get the road worthy done and move on.
It might have been the blue number plate lights. They are very strict on them here in SA.
Also there is no roadworthy check ever here in SA. Only if you draw attention to yourself or get pulled over at a breath test station where they also check license, rego, tyres and have a quick walk around the vehicle.
Yeah, ill admit that i knew id get pulled up on the blue rego lights, im happy to cop that one,
I got out of my car with a pair of white LED's in hand and said that i could change them on the spot.
Id be happy to cop a fine or a warning for them as i knew the risk when i put them in.
Really? No road worthy's at all?
So whats the deal with buying a car privately?
You can just buy it, swap over the rego and away you go, regardless of the condition?
dude sounds dodgey but seen it done the flexy fiberglass guide posts on the side of the road have a nice red sticker reflector.................... but on the same hand i didn't just tell you to run out and break the law........... lol
Making and running DUAL CHIPPED ECU SINCE 2010
Hahaha,
That's actually a fair good idea for a quick road worthy.
Pretty sure im going to buy a proper set that was suggested above though.
Your suggestion probably explains the exact reason that most of those posts in or around Dandenong have no reflectors on them, lol.
