I've been told I need a new steering rack
But my Calais steering is just fine, EXCEPT after going to hard lock or near hard lock RHS.
Coming back there's a slight "clunk" - more a feeling than a sound - like suddenly there's some play in the steering, but only momentarily.
Finding it hard to believe this is $750 replace the whole steering rack job - could it just be wear in a joint?
Should I even worry about it???
Thanks in advance for your advice.
I'd get under and try and locate the exact source of the "clunk" - jack the front up and put stands under it so it doesn't collapse on you and then wobble the wheels back and forth, turn steering fully left and right etc. Try and locate the exact position....it is possibly just a tierod end or rack end which are cheaper to replace. The Calais has the expensive and problem prone variotronic or something steering - some people replace it with the standard rack when it fails. It could also be coming from another part of the suspension. Good Luck.

to me it sound like a sway bar link, open your drivers door and rock the car side to side pushing on the door opening, if you cant hear the same noise stick your head under and look at the links. $750 seems a bit much for a rack does that also include the p/s pump?
