My son's VR Acclaim puts out low level noise and vibration from the steering that is really only noticeable when turning the wheel while moving slowly - as in backing out of parking bays and moving off. It is not noticeable at speed. Is there a quick fix for this or does fixing it mean a new or reconditioned steering rack?
it would be more than likley your p/s pump, i would flush the system and put a new one on it.
I'd check where the steering column goes thru the bulkhead - there is a grommet there that dries out and makes a groaning/creaky noise when turning - spray with WD40 from under the car. This fault is very common so I'd try it first. Post back if you need more explanation.

Thanks Glenn, I'll check that out in the morning. And Hako, I was hoping you would come up with a comment. Your experience and guidance in these forums is formidable/incredible. Prior to 2004 when my son bought the car the sole owner lived in a country town and there was a lot of red dust on the underbody and it could have had the effect of drying up around that grommet you mention. Thanks for the tip. I'll let you know how I get on.
The WD40 sorted it out. Thanks again.
Just tried WD40 on my VS also.....Quick test drive all seems fixed...thanks heaps guys!!

This noise with the steering is a very common problem on these models. When I first bought my VS,when the steering wheel was turned it would make a bad moaning, groaning type of sound.I took it to a couple of places and they looked at it and said the pump and/or rack need replacing etc.I then read on here about the dry steering shaft bush where the steering column shaft passes through the firewall.I sprayed it with WD40 and the noise completely disappeared, and has never come back either.Ive since fixed this on some other peoples cars ,and understandably they were wrapped to have it fixed so easily and cheaply after being told the same thing as me,the pump and/or rack need replacing.I wonder how many people have been caught out like this, got the the rack or pump replaced going on the advice from a "so-called" mechanic, and found they still had the noise there.
i got told by a so called mechanic that my p/s rack was kaput and leaking and needed replacing and yet in the 1 year i have owned the car i have never had to top up the fluid and the p/s works fine. i tried wd40 which worked great for about a month and then the issue came back. i have also noticed that when my tyre pressure is lower than the recommended level that the creak/groan gets worse. wd40 just doesnt seem to solve this issue permanetly for my car.
^^^ Try using a heavier type of spray lubricant such as Wurth HHS2000 or Wynns Viscotene.
This act more like a grease and last longer. I did mine over 2 years ago and so far, nothing.
Use a long handled screwdriver to spread the grommet so the spray can get in.
If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?
I think the main thing is to make sure the spray lube gets right up into the bush.I soaked mine heaps with WD.Its awkward to get at too,and most spray cans wont work properly when used upside down.I got to it a lot easier from up under the car.
thanks guys
