I like to concentrate on air intake,
OTR CAI was the first mod i did on my VR as its both cheap, and never has a negative effect.
Since then i've manufactured a sectioned off pod set up, which has made my throttle unbelievably responsive, both giving me a much smoother, cooler and sturdier drive with beautiful smooth but powerful take offs.
From there a bigger cam is always good, obviously extractors, new exhaust and so forth.
The way i look at it, id always suggest getting a new memcal after all of your mods are done so that it can be tuned around your modified car, and work with the modifications, rather than being tuned to a stock car.

Nah sorry mate, no pictures, lost my camera whilst moving recently.
It wasn't that hard, removed the air box and installed the pod filter as normal, and had my friend weld me a wall out of 2 sheets of steel with a 90 degree angle in it, we cut out the relevant holes for the piping and fit it.
When my bonnet is closed it sits pretty tightly above the wall we built so that no hot air from the engine bay gets in.
Its pretty simple to do, just takes a bit of measuring up.

    Oh man thats killer
Hope you can get it checked out soon and it isn't too expensive to get up and running again,
Although by the sounds of it, it may be.
    Fingers crossed bud.
