Hello,
On my VS Auto I'm getting fluid leaking near where the plastic inspection plate is under the torque converter, my guess is the front transmission seal getting old. I'm wondering how to go about this as the Gregories manual doesn't have a dedicated part for changing the transmission seal.
Is it possible while the transmission is on to undo the bolts holding the torque converter onto the flex plate (if this is possible with trans still in?), undo the transmission mounts and slide the transmission back and then slide off the converter from the shaft and then change the seal?
Or the other thing I had in mind is leave the torque converter remaining on the flexplate, and undo the transmission from it's mounts etc, slide it backwards, change the seal and slide back in.
I'm wondering does the exhaust front pipes need to be removed.
What's the easiest way to go about changing it?
Thanks.
Your first thought of how to was on the money.
Remove the inspection plate.
Undo the torque converter nuts or bolts.
mark the torque converter & the flex plate so goes back to the same position when installing.
Push the torque converter back into the transmission as far as it will go.
Remove the tailshaft, wiring, transmission fluid lines, etc etc (anything attaching).
Drain of fluid
Maybe able to do without removing the exhaust i'm unsure i've never had to do a VS. Would say at the very least take the exhaust off it's hangers & maybe even losen at flanges possibly.
Support the rear of the Auto & the rear of the motor so it can only tilt back the required distance to remove the auto (not far enough for the engine to be hitting the firewall.
Undo the cross-member.
Lower rear of Auto till rear of motor rests on support.
Undo the bellhousing bolts with the auto supported so can not fall causing damage or injury.
Remove the Transmission.
Slide the torque converter out.
Change the seal.
Smear some fluid onto the seal.
Installation in reverse
Just make sure before lifting the auto back & trying to bolt the bellhousing up that the torgue converter is as far back in the auto as it will go (turn it by hand & push in & you will feel it lock in on the tungs & splines inside).
