probably a stupid question but how long should i warn up the engine before driving? its a 94vr i think.
thanks
Dont think there is a set time for warming up your car but i always give mine a minimum of 1 minute i just look at the time on the song playing then off i go an i only do this for the 1st start up of the day . mine is a vx ss
Take it easy...But do take it...
Do not argue with an IDIOT.
He will just drag you down to his level an beat you with experience.
Some people take me the wrong way, Like smacking up Marijunna.
Theres a set time? I just start up, find a song, roll a smoke, and off i go, under a min i would say. I think i should read this link

I agree. I always give the ute a good minute. By the time you get in, get settled, switch the radio/iPod on - but the 'ol seat belt on...you've just about blown the time anyway.
Always good to give the motor enough time to build the oil pressure up and lubricate the parts that need it.
Cheers
In a VN handbook I have it says this about warmups= avoid long warm ups, they are unnecessary and waste fuel.An engine takes approximately 5 minutes to reach its efficient operating temperature, and it does this most effectively by driving down the road.Id say this would be relevent to the later models as well.
yeah you wouldnt need more than a minute on a cold winters morning. i remember reading somewhere most modern engines have moved around enough oil to get going in about 15 secs
On the topic of warming up and oil pressure. I heard that the pick ups in the ecotecs get blocked very easily. Is this true?

Only if you don't change the oil regularly.
Warm up isn't necessary. Only reason people used to do it was because carby cars don't vaporize the fuel real well when cold so they'd stall allot.
I let my VR idle for a good 2-5 mins, summer or winter, mainly as its got over 375,000km+ on the original motor,i do it just until i get the money for a rebuild. My BF XR8,i let it idle until it's on the 1/4 mark on the gauge, main reason is it's a pig to drive dead cold(it needs cold start tuning),and also to put some heat into the Gearbox as she don't like going into 2nd without a fight. It's really up to the individual

Soop is dead right,an engine with the old carby setup had to be warmed up,otherwise it would stall when trying to take off. These days with EFI and engine management systems,it can be 40 above or 40 below and these engines will start up and run perfectly, all because of the engine management system. The only thing to really watch with a cold engine is not to rev it hard or load up the engine too much until its fully up at operating temperature.
Agreed, not much point in warming up a modern EFI petrol if everythings in good working order. I normally give my VS 20 seconds or so, because its ####ed and the trans wont go into drive unless its been idled for a bit first. In my VR though, I just get in and go.
Its only a car.....
same as andrew426 i just start it, get comfy pull out the drive and go hard soon as i get on the street. iv always been taught if ur gonna drive it hard, drive it hard all the time. apparently goes the same for run in as well. run it in as you would drive it.
Start the car, no ticking or oil pressure light? great! lets go![]()
I noticed in the VR the oil reaches the heads pretty quick so I can't see it being that big of a drama in regards to warming up. If the car is modified with forged pistons then it's a different story.
Welcome to the internet where people have opinions that you might not like
well its better when you go hard to have a warm motor. especially with older motors or turbos because there designed to run warmed up. but i give it bout 20 30 secs before taking off and then drive it easy till the temp gauge starts going up because the gearbox and diff need to warm up too

Yeah i give mine about 30 secs to a min or so, maybe a litttle longer on colder morning
Start it and go. Don't drive it hard until its up to temp.
