    Default Diff shims, which way?

Stupid question, but i forgot to remember which side of the shim faces the carrier, the chamfer side or the flat side?

Youve taken your diff apart? You left what shims were to what side? Shims some in all different sizes, and you may not tell by eye, but one thou extra on one side wil through your gear mark up way off and cause diff whinging, binding and extra wear on bearings.

I think the chamfer faces the bearing, is that correct? I know what goes to what side, but the shims were so covered in muck i didn't note which side the chamfer went.

The bearing shell has a chamfer on the outside so I think i'll just go ahead and install the shims with the chamfers facing the bearings.

Ah ok, im trying to remember, havnt rebuilt a diff in quite awhile. Thinking back the chamber faces the bearing side. A quick question, what did you do to the diff. Say if you did bearings, switched the centre, changed ratio, new pinon seal, they will all effect the mark up of the gears.

All should be the same mark up if its the same centre housing and bearings. You could always get some diff paint and paint brush to test the mark up just in case.

Well once its out of the shed, just keep an ear out for any clunks or whines at certain speeds, this will be a result of a bad mark up.

All the factory assemblies have the flat side against the bearing shell, I believe the chamfer is to ensure that the shims seat far enough into the housing so that they don't interfere with the bearing cap seating correctly (i.e. just in case the housing isn't 100% machined out at the outer edges).

Oh well it's together now, it should be alright, the shims sat flush and the axles went in fine. If it blows up I'm blaming seq4x4 haha.
