Default dirty oil in rocker covers

i noticed when filling up oil the other day that there was alot of dirty oil deposits inside on my 5l. so i took the cover off to find a big layer of caked on sludge and oil pieces in the cover. the strange thing though is when i took the the drivers side cover off it was completely spotless with beutiful new looking oil. the motors got almost 250,000kms on it and it wasnt driven for many months before i bought it.
any idea as to what would cause only 1 side to get dirty like that?

Gasket probably failed awhile ago and it's just old oil that's been leaking and is now caked on.
Give it a clean, replace the gasket and should be right.

    Default Had the same thing

Thats funny cause i had the same exact thing. Drivers side one was like new almost and the other side was filthy. Both Rocker covers were leaking quite badly to. So why would only one side (Passenger Side) be extremely dirty?
The passanger side does have a hose attached to the throttle body. could this be why? anyone out there know?
Also would having so much crap in the one rocker cover be bad for the motor? Should i flush the motor?
    Thanks in advance

Trying to remove the crap with one of the engine flush additives will probably cause many more problems....like a blocked oil pickup strainer resulting in a seized engine. Carbon deposits that are sitting on parts of the block and head do no harm as long as they are not disturbed.

yeah i figured only one side was dirty because of the pcv but i was just guessing. good to know at least that is the case. gaskets were fine. i just took the dirty cover off and gave it a scrub with degreaser and put it back on. probably never been touched in the entire 250 thousand kms its seen untill i bought it

So youre saying engine flushes that you add to oil are a No go? eg lifter free additives etc ?

I think this depends on how gunked up the motor is... The only stuff I've used is where you run it for ~10-15 minutes and then drain & change the oil. I guess the longer this is left, the more likely you are to block things up - especially if its never been done...

I've heard this is one of the best products for engine cleaning
It is used with normal driving for about 5000kms

    Auto-Rx Internal Engine Cleaner

instructions on how to use are about half way down on the Home page . steps 1-6 i think

Has anyone used this product or heard about it?

I know plenty of people who have used these engine oil flushes before and have never had problems. Some of them seem to do a pretty good job too.

Thanks for the advice guys. Think i'll skip on the motor flush additives then. My oil always comes out clean anyway, so im thinking its only that rocker cover that was filth and hopefully the rest of the motor is reasonably clean.
One more thing, i always use the nulon flush (the one you run for 15 min before dumping oil) before every oil change (every 5k) . Is this a bad idea? Should i not be using that crap?

Reading their claims on the home page makes me think that it may have a bit of snake oil included - like they claim that "95% of vehicle problems are caused by the build-up of contaminants like carbon, sludge, dirt, and third-party abrasives in your engine? ".....that is a pretty crazy claim when you think about it.

Yeah,I wouldnt use any engine additives in my cars, but Ive seen plenty of people who have, and it seems to work removing the crap from the engine,Ive seen the crap that came out with the oil sitting on the bottom of the drain pan,and yeah, there was some crap in there. As for reading websites,I wouldnt believe anything on any companys website, every company claims that their product or whatever is the best etc etc.The only real way of knowing how good something works is by seeing how others go with it,or by trying it yourself.
