    Default VR Fuel gauge issues

The Fuel Gauge in my VR has been acting up ever since i've had the car. The gauge will go slightly past the full mark when the tank is filled up. Over the course of the week, the gauge will tend to operate normally till it falls to the 5/8 notch, then the gauge will start showing varied readings, it will go down a notch or two and then back up a notch or two, it does gradually fall as the tank empties.

The gauge will be bung on empty when i near 400k's of driving since fillup, though the car will get me a bit above 500km out of a tank, not the best, but not all that bad given the car's mileage. The cluster is a standard level 2. I was thinking it may be a voltage issue in the cluster causing the issue, though i'm looking for suggestions as to what else it could be as i'm sure someone else has had a similar problem.

Finally i was thinking of installing something along the lines of a scangauge (it's an aftermarket automotive computer), so i can get instantaneous fuel readouts. Would my issues with the level 2 cluster fuel gauge cause issues with the scangauge?

Sender unit in the tank will be the issue if the gauge works OK when full.

Can't really tell if the gauge is ok at full, as it goes slightly past the full mark, and actually can stay there until 100km or so of driving, bit hard to remember atm.

If it was the sender unit causing the issue, how would that be fixed? I heard that in some cars, a new tank is required.

The sender unit and second hand pump from the wreckers - $44 or there abouts.

Check the voltage regulator first as this costs nothing but some time - re solder the joints see if it gets better.

The tank on full for 100 kms is about right to me. My VN wagon (68 l tank) did 120 ish k's before hitting the full mark - then a steady fall from then on.

Checking the regulator first sounds like a good idea, sorry for the dumb question but where would i find that?
