What model commodore is it? If its a luxury spec V8, it would have a fair bit of weight compared to the V6. Car could be due for a oil change, various filters may be due for replacement, there's a few things that can slow a car down.

Years ago when the Torana ,GTHO,and valiant pacers were released. The phase 111 GT was the fastest overall, with a top speed of around 242.But the fastest over the quarter mile was the 265 hemi 6's which did the quarter in 13.something seconds, the GTHO managed a 14 something with standard diff gearing,a similar time to the Torana.A good six should kill a standard V8 from standstill over a short distance. Its up top where the V8 engine comes into its own.If you could let the V6 and V8 wind right out,you would most likely leave him behind. You might want to look into some lower diff gears to get it moving quicker down low .

Buy a decent exhaust system for it. Standard systems are a joke.
Standard V8 vs Standard V6, the 5.0 will only be a little bit quicker. Lots more torque though. But Dollar for dollar, modifying the 5.0 will result in a engine much better then the v6.

When I bought my 5ltr nearly 12 years ago, the dealer said that there was very litle difference between the V8 & V6 up to 100 and the V8 would move away thereafter.

has 2"12 inch exhaust from the cat back but still has the stock cast manifolds have a set of extractors that i plain of getting fitted the next few weeks should make a difference.
