Do the engine fans turn on when it gets between half to two thirds on the guage?
Unplug the engine fan connector and it should be on permanently.

did you open the heater all the way and bleed the system?
I bleed mine for 3 days with the heater open.
Bleed till no air comes out.

This is normal operation - as in the above post, worry if it gets into the red. Overheating is basically when the engine boils or is in the red section of the gauge. When you stop at the lights, there is no airflow thru the radiator to cool it till the gauge reaches about 3/4, then the fans turn on and she cools, then fans turn off and cycle is repeated over and over till car starts moving again and air is flowing through the radiator.

heres a trick for you if youre really worried about it. when stuck at the lights, open all your windows, set the fan to air circulate, turn the heat to hottest and set the speed to fastest. ive dont it a few times on a couple of different cars and it does help keep the temperature from shooting up too high as you are essentially allowing the engine to vent its hot air out of the car via the windows

I have had this before and found the new thermostat's faulty not opening, commodores are also renowned for radiators to be partially blocked so even if the fans come on it doesn't always cool the engine. Radiator shops can pull the rad apart and clean them and fit 2 new orings shouldn't cost to much.

    just calm the f**k down
if it goes to red or very close to it then your doing engine damage if not your all good
if you HATE normal operation like me
fit a lower temp thermostat you will lose a small amount of fuel economy for piece of mind
