    Default VS Ignition Barrel

    Hi all.

Recently my VS's ignition barrel decided to break, and after managing to get the broken one out (and eventually the little broken end out of the switch) and buying a generic replacement from repco (a Nice products http://niceproducts.com.au/images/photos/NIB72.gif) i can't get the replacement to go in, i've even tried to see how easy the old broken one goes in, but it stops at the same point...

I thought it may be because the steering lock is on, i can push down in the lock part with a screw driver and the steering is no longer locked, but i can't get it to stay unlocked.. so i've got a thin wire thing to push down on it (switch removed and coming in via the switch end) but it still gets stuck!.. I've already broken one replacement barrel (the "locator" bit broke) and seem to be putting far too much pressure on the new one for no result... any ideas on how to fix it??

    Cheers
    Simon

Try this "how-to"....it should provide the answer.

You should insert the ignition key into the new barrel, then turn the key to the "on" position, then you insert the barrel into its housing until it clicks home...

If you remove the bottom cover of the steering column, under the ignition lock theres a hole there somewhere, you insert a 3mm pin through this hole,Ive used a drill bit before on other similar ignition locks..Just insert whatever you find, into the hole, insert the ignition key into the lock, and turn it to the "on "position, the ignition key and barrel will just pull straight out once the pin youve inserted releases the catch..Just move the pin around and press it in there a bit to release the catch. The key reader has to be removed first though before removing the barrel.Does it still turn at all?Because it definitely has to be in the on position to get the barrel out.If it doesnt turn, try inserting the rest of the broken key and try to turn it to on then.I just noticed its a VY you are talking about,I dont even know if the VY ignition lock is the same as the VR/VS which was the car I was talking about.

http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/...ering-lock.jpg to slide the new barrel into the holder you need to remove the steering wheel and get to the lock pin that locks into the steering shaft you can see it in this pic once you push that down the barrel will just slide in its connected to the peice you are pushing inside the hole to unlock your steering and holds it up out the way of the barrel when the wheels off and you are holding it

i had the same problem trying to get my new ignition barrel in, steering lock was off, etc. Theres a small latch in there that is what your new barrel is hitting i think what we did was get something thin and push the latch up from the other side, slide the new barrel in and remove it from underneath the latch.

Read the link that I provided - it tells you to grind the shear bolts off. Here it is again if you didn't read my post: How to remove a stuck ignition barrel VN-VS

i had the exact same problem last week....the new barrel just wouldnt go in as it seemed poorly made and not a perfect fit
i ended up just sanding the edges of it nice and smooth for about half and hr then it slid straight in no hassles

also did you open up the old barrel and remove the tumblers?? and then put them in the new barrel

or are you planning on just using a new key

its quite easy to change them over

    These locks are an abomination.

As above, I had to file a new genuine barrel to get it to work correctly. Even now, months later, the steering lock sometimes wont engage.

All I can suggest is you keep fiddling with it, try some different techniques until you can make it work. ( I must have installed the barrel ten times before it felt OK)

It's hard when your a trying to fix something so poorly designed.

To get you going when its busted, use hako's method of removing the shear bolts.

To make it a simple change over i was just going to use the new key...

Ill have to give sanding a go, but i still think its hitting the steering lock bit...

    Cheers for the advice.

you could always take it to a locksmith and ask them to change the lock to suit your old key. I cant imagine they would charge a whole lot just to change a few tumblers over

not sure when it comes to the steering lock bit...i had no trouble with mine getting in the way

yeah just go to a locksmith, a good one will only be around $80-$100 including the barrel coding to your key and fitting.
