im after a replacement trans but having trouble finding a 5hbd to replace the old one but ive been told the 97 vs ss had a 7hbd trans. will it be a straight swap or are there any issues with size or anything else?? Has anyone heard of or done this kinda swap??
Im sure Ive read somewhere that the number at the start of the transmission part number, stands for the year the car was made.4HBD was from a VRV8 made in 199(4).A 5HBD was released with the VSV8 in 199(5) and so on,and the VS has an extra pin in the transmission electrical connector (the VR's use 12 pins, the VS's use 13 pins.)Seeing the VS model went over a couple of years, the 5HBD,6HBD and 7HBD should all be interchangable. As long as they all have the 13 pins in the connector.I think they also changed the size of the transmission cooling line connector unions..I think its the same with the V6 transmissions ,but they use a slightly different part number.(4HDD.5HDD,6HDD etc).Im not 100% sure about all this info,Im only going on what Ive read online.Ive never actually swapped these transmissions,so I may be way wrong about all this.
cheers i'll have to check it out but id have to think that they should be apart from the hoses u mentioned i cant see each year of the vs having different tailshafts etc
VR 1994 - 4HDD/V6 - 4HBD/V8 first electonically controlled auto.
VR II 1995 - 5HDD/V6 - 5HBD/V8 extra solenoid fitted to provide softer "LOCK UP" torque converter clutch apply.
VS 1996 - 6HDD/V6 - 6HBD/V8 the design of the previously added solenoid was changed and is not backwards compatible with the previous model.
VS II 1997-7HDD/V6 - 7HBD/V8 basically the same as the 1996 unit except the thread size of the cooler pipe unions was enlarged.
Although the above units may physically fit other model vehicles, the electrical differences are sufficient to cause a conflict with the computer software thus causing the unit to go into "FAILSAFE" (limp mode).
5H** units and later were equipped with the "PWM" (Pulse Width Modulation) system in order to allow the digital signals from the computer to better control the "LOCK UP" clutch system.

ok but i have a vs ss hsv enhanced build dated april 96with a 5hbd??? and according to what you wrote and what ive heard and seen on another site i should have a 6hbd. sp perhaps it was replaced at sometime or it may have come from the factory as is i have little or no history of the car from when i bought it.
have a look at the build plate from Holden. it may have been first registered in 1996 but may have been built in 1995 in the Holden factory before HSV put there bits on it

right i have bean told the same thing i have a 95 vs ss built in the last 3 months of 95 and have bean told that it should have a 5hbd in it but ive had a look at the sticker on trans behind the engin and it says its a 6hbd but its a 95
95 vr had the 5, 95 vs had the 6 pretty sure, same with v6's vs 95's had 6hdd
ok hope so couse i cant find a 5hbd only 6 and 7hbd's and my one is also runing a 6hbd and it needs replaceing cheres
All I know is VR's and VS's Autos are NOT interchangeable... Found out the hard way... One has an extra solenoid and a larger pump then the other.
Limp mode FTW!
yea thats what ive also bean told but i wose told i should have a 5hbd and i can not run a 6hbd or 7hbd but like i sead it seems to have a 6hbd so ive just gone and brought a 6hbd to replace the old 1 i have in it now hope nothing gose ronge
I have done a swap like this with different transmissions. They WILL WORK what I done was change the loom if 1 was 12 pin and 1 was 13 pin, and used the memcal that suited the trans and all was good
ok cheres will keep that in mind if i have trobils but my 1 hase a 6hbd in a 95 nd got another 6hbd to go in so as long as i dont drnk to much b4 i start work i should b sweet hopefiley
^^^agreed. Why go to all the trouble of swapping over the wiring loom etc, when you can just fit the same box that suits your model.Pfff..Its not like these auto boxes are rare..
It was for my stepbrother and he had already brought a smashed car and that was the box that was in it.
Lol massive #### around?? How long do you think it would be to flip off 1 engine loom for another and replace 1 memcal with another????
The post was made just to point out that it can be done if you had another box there and was stuck in a jam
