hey guys got told today to start saving for a new gearbox he said $2000 for a new auto box fitted am i being ripped off?.. also i would love to change it to a manual how much trouble is it to convert and how much?
any help is good.
cheers joel
oh and i drive a 95 3.8lt vs calais..
You could pick up a good second hand one a lot cheaper, around $500 or so.It just depends on you ,and if you want to pay for a fully reconditioned transmission or not.Ive heard of prices being from $1500 to $2500 for a reconditioned transmission .So $2000 would probably be right.Id shop around though and get a few different quotes before committing to one place.
If I was you mate i'd get it converted to manual. There is a great write up in the how to section about it, not sure on how much it'd cost to get everything though
I replaced the headlights in my car with strobe lights, so it looks like I'm the only one moving
As you are located in Hervey Bay, you do not have many options. Unless you live in Brisbane you will not have access to wreckers to source all the parts required. Wreckers in Rocky, Mackay and Townsville would be flat out even having a manual VS and I'm not sure you even have a small wrecker in Hervey Bay.
So my advice, FWIW and speaking from experience is to take the $2000 option...I did 4 years ago....yes I wish sometimes I'd changed to a manual but there are many hassles and many trips to the wreckers to finish the job. Leave it till the next car and enjoy your Calais with a sharp changing reco auto. $2000 is about the right price for a good job with a warranty and if you are happy with the job, you are not getting ripped off.

$2000 is the general ballpark figure ive seen and been quoted but ive seen a fuully recoed vs v8 auto for $1450 just saving my cash for that
Unfortunately you usually get what you pay for - a V8 reco for $1450 fitted would cost almost that just for the hard parts. Unfortunately many times an transmission is called "reconditioned" when all they've done is replace the broken part and the rest of the gearbox is as it was before. A proper 'reco' includes all seals, bearings, "O" rings, full cleanout plus a new/reco torque converter. Plus you get a proper guarantee...not "we'll look after you". So before I bought one I'd check it out very carefully....it may be OK but....

i would look into moving to a manual conversion mate. if your a little mechanical minded you can do it all yourself in a weekend i am planing on doing this soon as well.
all the way reco your box bout 2000 is right to.
It is still a big job to change to manual if you dont have the correct tools, and the time and space to do the job. most conversions down here for a manual is around the $1500 mark for the v6.
If you are interested i have a good vs v6 auto that i could sell you it has 140000 klm on the clock, it was removed when a manual conversion was done. nothing wrong with it. $200 If your interested let me know
