Default Whine from front of VS Executive

    Hi guys,

Had my transmission serviced a month or so ago. No probs. Past couple of days car has developed a whine which sounds like it's coming through the dash. Whine increases in pitch under acceleration from takeoff and decreases in pitch under deceleration to stop. Cannot hear it at higher revs.

I am guessing it is something to do with the transmission?

    Any ideas?

you might have to be more specific than 'whine'. If its a sucking whistling noise it could be a vacuum leak on the intake, or a bearing noise could be an idler pulley getting noisy.
Any more info ? check the trans fluid level just to be sure.

Try it with and without the A/C on - see if the noise goes away.

OK, checked transmission fluid = all good

    Checked A/C on/off = makes no difference

In terms of the sound... it may be a whirring sound I suppose? Most of the bits which spin on the front of the engine (alternator, water pump, idler pulley etc) have been changed this year.

I suppose it could be a vaccum leak but it does sound more whirring/whining than sucking.

Sounds like it could be the power steering pump. Very common on the VS.

Steering wheel straight or turned doesn't seem to effect it...

So if it is the pump on it's way out am I right to drive it until the pump gives up completely?

Also maybe just check the water pump, if the pully face can wobble a bit that means it is on its way out. If you look at the water pump face while car is running you will be able to see if it is rotating straight or not.

Brand new belt fitted about 4-5 weeks ago.

    Water pump changed in January.

Any chance it's the alternator diode? Alternator was changed in about May/June but recon unit fitted not brand new.

I have exactly the same issue and haven't found the source yet either. Sound coming from behind dash more prominent at high rpm in 2nd for me.
