    Angry Front end noise!

Well iv had this noise for a while now, kind of like a constant knocking bump noise, ive discovered that it makes it only when the wheels are straight while driving, the noise goes away when i turn the steering wheel to the left so im taking pressure off the left wheel when cornering pretty much and then comes back when i straighten up??? the bearings feel pretty ok. what could it be?

Is it speed orientated? ie: as the car speeds up, the knock speeds up too. (like a stone caught in your treads)
Or does it only happen when the car goes over bumpy road?

Have you actually taken of both front wheels and visually inspected all the mechanical connections in your wheel wells?

yes the noise speeds up is most noticable at about 40kmh, checked for stones etc, takin wheel off so many times

jack up the front wheels, (one at a time) and free spin the wheel by hand, slowly, to see if you can feel/hear anything "grabbing" or "clicking".

It could be the wheel bearing, or pehaps something on the brake disc hitting the caliper? I noticed on my car, the wheel itself (I got 235/45/R17's) sits very close to the strut tower. maybe something on the rim sticks out and hits the tower whilst the wheel turns around. a loose balance weight? a screw in the tyre?

are you sure the noise is in the front end? noises have a sneaky tendancy to sound like they are coming from a completely different spot!

If it was the back wheel, it could be the handbrake shoes inside the discs, wheel bearings or brakes? etc.

for the sake of $14... you could get the check anyway, and just mention the noise before they check it.

i got a check done a while ago, they give you a full itemised quote, explaining all that needs replacing and the costs... oh the cost....!! :P

what i did was buy the parts needed myself and changed everything myself and saved $$$.

so yeah, if you can't find it... $14 all the way!

    .
Stick a bar through your spokes and onto a brake disc, use it to tip the wheel up and down while you pull the top of the wheel towards you with your free hand

I have had this, and they only make noise on bumps, not from rotation of the wheels moving along the road. And they also tend to make a "tink tink" noise as they act like little musical symbols.

My VS had the exact same problem, so I replaced the sway bar bushes cause they were stuffed, and thought it would of fixed the noise, drove it after new ones were on and it still made the noise. Found out it was the tie rod ends they were buggered and about to let go.

it probably is the tie rod end, i replaced the right hand side not long ago because it was stuffed, so the other one has probably let go

Sorry to ask after a while.... But I was wondering if you ever found out what the problem was?
I have the same problem with my VS commodore and was wondering if you managed to sort out the problem at all.
    Cheers

its cool mate, im pretty sure now its the left side wheel bearing, jacked it up and theres a bit of play and noise coming from it, when ever i slightly turn the steering wheel right while driving straight it starts vibrating

The VR/VS dont have the usual tapered type front wheel bearings like VN/VP.These are a sealed hub unit, and when the bearing wears out,the whole hub unit has to be replaced.Last time I bought new ones they were $190 each from holden. Some places I called wanted something like $300 each!!!.Holden was the last place I thought would be the cheapest, and they are genuine holden parts. There was some cheap dodgey ones from china floating around on ebay.I dont know if they are still about, but stay away from them if they are really cheap.

They will give you an exhaustive list of faults, tell you the repairs are urgent bla bla bla so just be prepared for the hard sell. Most of what they will pick won't need changing anyway.
