    Post Key Problems- VR Commodore!!!!?

I am wondering if someone can give me a little advice!!
I have a vr commodore, The key needs replacing I need a whole new key that has to be replaced and recoded i have been looking on ebay and for a fraction of the price there are vr key ignition barrels and keys, Would i be able to just replace a new ignition in the car without having to worry about codes ect... The keys tht come with the sale ignitions do not have central locking ect? Would they still work in my car and start it with a whole new ignition barrel. Thankyou.

Replacing the ignition barrel wont help at all you will still need a new replacement key..

The key head not only does central locking but it also needs to contact the little reader strips that are around the ignition barrel to send the correct security code to the cars bcm.
If the code on the key head matches then the car starts,, what you also have to remember is that once the battery goes flat in the key it will no longer start the car, an no longer unlock the doors.
Without seeing the barrel your looking at it is most likely a locksmith pack witch basically means you have to assemble it to suit your key.

If the one your looking at says something like pre assembled then you will have 2 different keys one for doors an one for ignition an you wont be any better off

I have also put a pic below of what a locksmith kit is, sorry about the dark pic but it was with a stupid phone cam.

Go to one of the Mister Minute kiosks in any large shopping centre. The can sell you a new key and key head for around $60. Providing your old key still works to disable the immobiliser, you just use your old key to unlock the car/disable the immobiliser, insert the new key into the ignition for about 30 secs, and Bob's your uncle.

Not to hijack this thread, but how much is it to code a blank FOB and will a FOB that was meant for VX work on a VR?

Mister Minit in both Toowoomba and Townsville charge just under $100 for keyhead coded and key....that is what I have paid but they do have specials and if there are more than one in your city they will compete and lower those prices. It is about $10 or so cheaper if you just need the keyhead. You can go the Holden but expect to pay much much more.

like i said in another thread, local members to Mackay i can do a better deal, As for the varying prices that should not happen as it is a set price across all stores, the only exemption to this is a franchise store and a company store, but that is getting a lil off topic. if you get charged anywhere from say 80$ to 120$ is about average (also depends on weather it a complete key or just the head), anymore is just a rip off, etc Holden dealers
