Default Metal tube on VS air intake sensor wire?

    Hi,

My VS had the air intake wires taped up with electrical tape. Im guessing this is from the previous owner because it looked different to the tape around the rest of the wires in the engine bay. I took the suspicious tape off and found the air flow sensor wire and the wire that goes to the air filter were bunched together and there was a metal tube about 50mm long and 10mm diameter on the air flow sensor wire. The tube was in plastic/hard rubber.

I was just wondering if this is stock or not because my fault code check says there is a problem with my air flow sensor.

    Your help is much appreciated!

Yeah I just took some more tape off and both the brown and the black wires to the air filter have been cut and re-soldered for some reason, the same with the brown/white stripe wire to the sensor.

Also the metal thing looks like a thick iron tube. Something to do with resistance due to magnetic induction you reckon??? But why? Is that so the engine will think it is getting hotter or colder air than it actually is so it pumps more fuel in or something??

    its a ferrite suppression tube.

because the MAF sensor returns it reading to the ECU as a frequency, the 'tube' protects this signal from any interference.

    so, don't remove it.

i think someones removed the air temp sensor and put a resistor to make it think its getting cold air all the time. I had one on my vs ute but i took it off and got a sensor from the wreckers . Runs heaps smoother with the stock air temp sensor
