This isn't a major issue, just something i think would be pretty nice if it could be done.
I'm kinda getting sick of my VR's 1 ish metre range when unlocking it with the button on the key.
I've noticed that sometimes (more-so on the passenger side) i have to get right up to even within a foot of the car for it to unlock, where as the drivers side goes out to about a metre - a metre and a half.
This has me thinking that as its aged, whatever it is that picks up the key has lost some functionability.
My question is, firstly what is this part, and is there a way to increase this range, fix, or replace this part?
My old VT would unlock up to about 4 metre's away and it would be great to get something like that back again.
Cost, who does it, whats involved and all of that please!
Cheers![]()
Hold it to your head. works on my dads AU, works on my VN. normally the vn ( aftermarket system) is like 30 metres or something ridiculous. if i hold it to my head ( for party tricks ect) i can get over 50-60 metres out of it. no bullshit. lol
the key is fine, just the plastic keyhead, you can get a new one done for less than $100 You need to take it to someone that has a scantool to program a blank key to your car, i think also if you goto Mr Minit they can program a new one from your old key.
There's a cell battery in the keyhead that powers the transmitter for the lock unlock buttons after 5 or so years they can start to die.
To your other question you point the key towards your head while looking at the car.
[QUOTE]Oh, really?
I figured the comment before yours was a dig, lol.
So hold it at head height facing the car, or hold it facing my head? :S/QUOTE]
yeah, if the key is old then a new one cant hurt. my mates got a VR, same problem as you. i didnt think of the key-head trick at the time though. give it a shot.
Um i usually just hold it up to my temple and push the button, wether your facing the car or not shouldnt make much of a difference.
got the idea off top gear when Clarkson did it on a Lambo :P
...hmm i wonder if doing this on a regular basis microwaves your brain... but then again we spend way more time with a mobile phone held up to our head than the key to our cars
( sorry i ramble) ha
Oh wow, im gonna try it tonight while walking to my car after work. I'll probably look like a knob doing it....
BTW, anyone know how it works?
I cant see how it would be any different from just holding onto the key with your hand, thats if it uses your body or whatever as a sort of aerial extension.Maybe its just because you are holding it higher up than usual. When these keys are new, they work over a fair distance anyway.Does anyone know where the actual signal is picked up at on the car? I know the BCM receives the keys signal, but you would think it would need some kind of aerial to pick up the signal from the key.So does it use a type or aerial,or does the BCM receive the signal directly from ther key.You would think the BCM would have trouble receiving the signal directly, being up under the dash.

A new key head should help as the battery is new.
If you open up the BCM you may find a loop of wire soldered into the board. This is the antenna for the key.
If you extened the antenna by looping a thin insulated wire (do not solder it) around this antenna and run it out of the BCM and up the drivers door pillar, this also should help the range.
If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?
Geez,
I tried this walking up to my car last night, about.. 10 ish metres away,
Unlocked first time!
I though to my self "no friggen way" and tried to lock and unlock it normally with no luck, then put it back to my head and heard that re assuring 'click' of the locks move again.
I walked to what must have been 30 metres from my car, and successfully tried it again without any fails.
Tried it as well on my mates Omega last night and got at least 50 metres away.
Amazing,
Thanks guys.
Ok guys, so this is a cool trick but im really needing to figure out a way to extend this range.
Can i replace or upgrade the antenna or something?
A friend of mines Sportivo reaches somewhere around 50 metres, and naturally as Commodore owners we like to be the best,
So lets put our semi fried and tumour ridden brains together and figure this out!
I'd say a larger antenna on the car, you'd have to find out what frequency it uses, and then research omni-directional antenna designs that are good for receiving that frequency.
Noted, though figured there may be a slightly more attractive way to do this, as i was asking if i could replace or upgrade the antenna, not have it hanging up out the door, which is what i imagine it would look like.
If im wrong please correct me as to exactly where to extend the insulated wire to and if it could remain covered.
Cheers.
Can someone provide a pix of where the BCM is exactly (97 VS Series II SC)?
My carkeys behave weirdly.
one has 'across the yard range' while other is 'next to door'.
I also bought a replacement key so i dont have to keep paying $100+ everytime battery goes flat. (it has next to door range on it now, but has old battery in it)
