Its a HSV gear knob i bought for $30, i thought it'll cost $50-100 to have it re-wrapped and that would still save me alot instead of paying $200+ for one

Have you seen the article on Autospeed about recovering a gear knob and steering wheel? It's a few years old now but there are prices and the 'shop which did the work is listed which would give you an idea of what sort of place to look for.

Alternatively, maybe do it yourself? I've recovered 4 gear knobs now. It's not too hard, although each one has been an improvement on the last. Some 'second' grade leather (a whole kidskin - skins are downgraded if they have tiny marks in them but there is plenty of clean area to get enough for a (few) gear knob(s) - was $5). I asked for glove leather. Then a couple more dollars for a needle, wax and thread. The skin - actually skins I bought a couple of different colours - I found at a specialist leather warehouse; they supply leather for hobbies. The wax, needle and thread came from Spotlight.

Working from scratch, you need a pattern which is a bit tricky to get right but it should be easier if you can use the old cover. Be aware that leather is a natural material and stretches. The stretch is not even in every direction so you have to play around a bit before you cut to pick a piece of the skin that has the best stretch for the surface you are covering.

A double baseball stitch looks good. There are plenty of instructions on how to do that on the web but keep the threads crossing over on the same side for each stitch. I didn't on one and it looks uneven.

Also, a liitle bit of contact cement under the leather will stop it moving around and stretching with use.

If the shift pattern is imprinted into the leather you do lose that and there needs to be something for it to be legal. Using a printed sticker under a "Page Pebble", stuck to the console, is one solution.
