Id say its pretty much a full rebuild needed. If they are worn badly,so will a lot of other parts.A reconditioned box might be the go if rebuilding it yourself is not an option, or if it is going to work out be more expensive than a reco box..Id look online for prices and/or call a few places as well for reconditioned box prices, also try ebay maybe, before making any decisions. The syncros keep the gears running at the same speed (or sync them) so it doesnt clash or grind when shifting..Years ago,the old non syncro boxes had to be double clutched to shift gears,Clutch in,shift to neutral, clutch out, then clutch back in again, shift to the next gear once the revs of the engine and the road speed were pretty much the same. They werent too bad once you got the hang of them.Anyway thats pretty much what syncros do.

I'd be surprised if all the synchro's were buggered...maybe one or rarely 2, bot not all of them.....unless your problem is not the synchro's! It could be that the clutch not releasing properly causing the same set of dramas. To check whether the clutch is operating correctly, try selecting reverse withe the car stationary and the engine idling....and do it this way: gear lever in neutral, floor the clutch, wait 2 seconds (to allow the cluster gear to stop spinning), then select reverse with the gear lever.....it should slide in smoothly with no crunching or hesitation. If it doesn't slip in nicely it probably means that the clutch is not releasing, maybe due to adjustment of wear. Clutches are far cheaper and easier to fix than gearboxes.
    Good Luck.
