Hey guys,
Had a battery warning pop up on my dash yesterday so I charged up the battery but the warning is still there. Does this warning light also give indications of issues with the alternator?
I hooked my multimeter up to the alternator and it gave a reading of 12 - 12.5 V. Is this to low? Is there any other way for me to test if the alternator has died?
Cheers
should be around 14volts with the car running, the battery light only comes on when the alternator stops charging, id say the voltage regulator on the alternator is out of brushes or its just faulty which is a common problem
Well I am running a couple of amps (around 1800wrms) off of it and it recently had a bit of a bath in power steering fluid (had an issue with the pump) so I gather neither of these things would have helped it. Is it possible to get it reconditioned or should I just look at replacing it?
yes they can get reconditioned depending on what is wrong with it, if the power steering fluid has gotten into the alternator it could of caused more damage. you could replace the regulator first which you could do yourself and see if that fixes it, otherwise you could take it to an auto elec where they could pull it apart and test it to see if it is worth reconditioning. if you dont want to spend much you could to get a used one from the wreckers or maybe try ebay for some cheap aftermarket alternators
Just did a bit of searching and I don't think I will worry about fixing this alternator. Being a stock alternator I have read it is only 85 amp. As it is my headlights and dashlights start flashing when I turn my stereo up so I think it is time for me to upgrade the alternator to a bigger one. Time to go hunting on ebay
Thanks for the input man![]()
